Biography

During a heartwarming ceremony on the campus of California State University, Bakersfield, the Roadrunner volleyball team welcomed its newest member of the team in 10-year-old Kennedy Reynolds from Bakersfield, Calif. CSUB Head Coach Giovana Melo signed Kennedy to join the `Runners as a member of the squad, rounding out the Bakersfield roster for 2022.

"When we are recruiting," Coach Melo said, "we look for players that are tough and resilient. There are a lot of things that we look forward to having in a player and Kennedy and her family couldn't be more perfect for our family and we are so excited to welcome her."

Inside CSUB's Kegley Center for Student Success on Thursday afternoon, dozens of student-athletes, coaches, and athletics staff gathered around to watch Melo hand off the Signing Letter to Kennedy. With her parents, Scott and Kara, next to her and her siblings in the audience, Kennedy inked her letter and became the newest Roadrunner.

"A lot of people call me a joyous sunshine, like my aunt, my mom, my dad, my sister, and my brother," Kennedy said when prompted to describe herself. When asked why she was excited to join the team, Kennedy stated that she was looking forward to being a part of something, and the `Runners were more than happy to be that "something" for Kennedy to join.

"We believe Kennedy is the perfect fit for our program because she brings so much energy, so much life, and even a little sass," said Paige Calvin, senior libero for the `Runners.

"Her energy is so contagious," added outside hitter Lizzie Binder, "which is a great contribution to the team. She keeps things light and fun, so we are super happy and excited to welcome her."

After putting down the pen to a chorus of cheers and taking some pictures, Kennedy gaped at her brand new Under Armour shoes and a gold "Bakersfield" jersey that exactly matches the uniform the `Runners wear on the court. With the number 10 on her back, matching her age, Kennedy posed for dozens of pictures with her family and her new team, wrapping up a beautiful Signing Day ceremony.

Kennedy and the `Runner volleyball team were connected through Team IMPACT, a non-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses by establishing and expanding vibrant team-based support networks.
