In 2023, he was selected to participate in the inaugural WBCA Next Generation Institute — a new high-level education program for experienced assistant coaches who aspire to become head coaches at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels.

Johnson served as assistant coach during the 2013-14 season before being promoted to associate head coach prior to the start of the 2014-15 campaign.

Johnson began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Mississippi where from 2001-03 he assisted with practice, film breakdown and exchange, and recruiting with the men’s program under current Bakersfield head coach Rod Barnes.

Johnson continued his coaching career on the prep level in Mississippi where he was the Boys Basketball Coach at North Panola High School (2006-07) and the Girls Basketball Coach at Holly Springs High School (2010-12). He has also served as an AAU Basketball Coach in Oxford, Miss.

Johnson has also worked in the Department of Compliance (2002) and the Graduate School (2003-06) at Mississippi.

Johnson earned his undergraduate degree in sports administration from William Penn University (Iowa) where he played for two seasons (1998-00) for the Statesmen. He earned his masters in higher education and student personnel from Mississippi in 2003.

Xavier has three children, Madison, Caiden and Aria.
