McGaughey begins his sixth season on the CSUB coaching staff in the Fall of 2023, and is actively involved in all aspects of the coaching process, including designing and managing training sessions, opposition scouting and analysis, recruiting, and video management. He also leads the CSUB Soccer mentoring program, placing current student-athletes with local organizations to drive youth engagement with the sport of soccer and reinforce the importance of education and hard work.
McGaughey also coaches in the Albion Central California Organization as part of the Elite Academy League, serving as head coach at the U14 and U17 levels. He holds a USSF National D License and has earned several United Soccer Coaches special topic diplomas, an assistant coach professional development certificate and a collegiate coach professional development certificate.
A native of Northern Ireland, McGaughey began his collegiate career at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas where he was a two-time First Team All-America selection and led the Apaches to the 2012 NJCAA National Championship. He went on to play at Missouri-Kansas City for two seasons, earning team MVP honors as a senior in 2014 when he played every minute in the Kangaroo goal, posting a 1.37 goals against average and a career-best 90 saves. He finished his UMKC career with 12 victories and five clean sheets. He earned his Bachelor's of Science in Sociology, with a focus on Anthropology, from UMKC in 2015.
After graduation, McGaughey spent four seasons competing for Portadown FC in the Irish Premiership. He was also involved in coaching and recruitment for the Portadown FC organization. McGaughey also boasts experience coaching with the Oxford Sunnyside Football Club U18 side and boasts a wealth of experience coaching at the club level, including working under coaches Rick Benben and Alan Mayer. He's also been a regular on the collegiate camp circuit, working camps and clinics across the state of California and around the country.
McGaughey joined the Bakersfield staff in 2018 and has helped lead the Roadrunners to four post-season tournaments in four seasons of competition, including a trip to the Western Athletic Conference semifinals in 2019. A former goalkeeper himself, McGaughey played a key role in mentoring Detre Bell, one of the most highly decorated and successful keepers of CSUB's Division I era.
McGaughey earned a Master's of Public Administration from CSUB in 2020, while also being inducted into the Pi Kappa Alpha National Honors fraternity in grad school.
He is a native of Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, and now lives in Bakersfield with his wife, April McGaughey, their daughter, Elizabeth, and dog, Nutmeg.
