`Runners Battle Cal Poly in Big West Opener on the Road

Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team dropped its Big West opener to Cal Poly 25-21, 25-21, 25-11 on Friday at Mott Athletics Center. The Roadrunners battled the Mustangs, a 2025 Sweet 16 squad, but were unable to close the deal in early sets.

Jordyn Waite-Ward and Suelen Lima led CSUB with six kills apiece. Leylah Duran added five kills on .364 hitting and served up two aces.
Setter Samantha Capinpin recorded a double-double with team highs of 11 assists and 10 digs.
The `Runners hit .308 in the second set, producing 15 kills with three errors on 39 attacks.
Emma Fredrick paced Cal Poly with 11 kills, while Alexis Haury added 27 assists, 11 digs and three aces for the Mustangs.

How it Happened

Cal Poly scored the first seven points of the match, but CSUB worked its way back. The `Runners used a 5-0 run to cut a 14-8 deficit to one before the Mustangs answered with four straight points. CSUB later pulled within 21-19, but Cal Poly held on for the first set.

The Mustangs opened the second set 3-0 and led throughout. Trailing 19-13, CSUB strung together four consecutive points and later narrowed the gap to 23-21, but Cal Poly claimed the final two rallies to take a two-set lead.

Cal Poly again took an early 3-0 lead in the third and used a 4-0 run to move ahead 9-2. The `Runners answered with three straight points to pull within 12-7, but the Mustangs responded with a 3-0 run and closed the match on seven consecutive points.
