Bakersfield shuts out Hawai‘i, 2-0, behind King and Gutierrez

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield rode a dominant pitching performance to a 2-0 shutout victory over Hawai‘i on Friday night at Hardt Field. With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 16-22 overall and 7-9 in Big West play, while the Rainbow Warriors fall to 18-15 (8-11 Big West).

Right-hander Ryan King (3-3) set the tone on the mound, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and striking out seven. King worked around three walks and limited Hawai‘i to just one extra-base hit in his outing.

CSUB broke through in the third inning when Devon Wilkes delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Jacob May to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead. Bakersfield added an insurance run in the fifth as May created havoc on the bases, stealing home to extend the advantage to 2-0.

Jacob Gutierrez closed the door for the ‘Runners, earning his second save of the season with three shutout innings out of the bullpen. The right-hander struck out five and did not allow a walk, securing the combined shutout.

At the plate, Wilkes led the way with two hits and the lone RBI, while May scored both runs and added a stolen base. The Roadrunners collected seven hits on the night.

Hawai‘i starter Isaiah Magdaleno (4-3) took the loss despite a solid outing, allowing two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts.

Bakersfield and Hawai‘i will continue the series on Saturday at Hardt Field.
