Roadrunners Shut Out Long Beach State, 3-0

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield delivered a complete performance on both sides of the ball Friday night at Hardt Field, defeating Long Beach State 3-0 in Big West action.

The Roadrunners (8-14, 2-5 Big West) struck early, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Elgin Bennett provided the big swing with a home run—his fourth of the season—to give CSUB an early advantage it would not relinquish.

CSUB added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Evan Cloyd doubled and later scored on a clutch RBI double from Devon Wilkes, extending the lead to 3-0.

On the mound, right-hander Ryan King (1-2) turned in a strong outing, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings while allowing six hits and striking out five. King worked out of multiple jams, stranding runners and keeping Long Beach State off the scoreboard throughout his start.

Jacob Gutierrez was dominant in relief, earning his second save of the season with 2.2 perfect innings. The right-hander struck out four of the eight batters he faced to seal the shutout.

Offensively, CSUB recorded seven hits on the night. Bennett finished with two RBIs, Wilkes added a pair of RBIs, and Cloyd continued his strong season at the plate.

Long Beach State (7-14, 2-5 Big West) totaled six hits but was unable to capitalize, leaving eight runners on base.

CSU Bakersfield will continue its Big West series against the Dirtbags on Saturday at Hardt Field.
