Parker Makes History at Big West Champs; Takes Home Two Medals

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Makiah Parker sets history for the Cal State Bakersfield Track & Field program at the Big West Championships. Parker became the first CSUB freshman in the Division I era to win an individual title in any conference championship. The Texas native took home the gold in the women's 200m final with a new personal best time of 23.26. She went on to break her own school record in the event. It is the third straight time she has broken the record.

Parker had a great start in the event, but ultimately took control on the curve, and in the final 40 meters, she led the way through the finish to get the victory over UC Riverside's Raykiyat (23.30) and Cal State Fullerton's Ashley Odiase (23.41).

Parker added a second-place finish in the women's 100m earlier in the day at the championship meet—her time of 11.57 was good for silver in the event. Cal State Fullerton's Brooklyn Davis (11.54) placed first while Long Beach State's Trinity Barnett (11.60) was third. Parker earned a total of 18 points for the Roadrunners.

She became the first Roadrunner to take home two medals at the conference championship meet. She joins Miranda Miller (2022, 2023) and Kynnedi McCall (2024) as the only CSUB athletes to be individual winners in the Big West championship meet.

Parker's historic freshman season will continue after qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary Meet in two weeks in College Station, Texas.
