The Cal State Bakersfield baseball team had a busy week, starting with a midweek game against the Cal Bears and then heading to San Diego for their first-ever matchup against the University of San Diego Toreros.

CSUB 5, Cal 6 (11 innings)

• In an exciting midweek game, Bakersfield came out swinging, taking an early 1-0 lead. Cal quickly answered back in the bottom of the second.
• Both teams traded runs back and forth, with Bakersfield regaining the lead 4-2 in the fourth thanks to Jared Bujanda’s first home run of the season.
• Jack Leary kept the Bears quiet through the seventh, striking out five and allowing just two runs.
• Michael Riley took over on the mound, and the game went into extra innings tied at 5-5. In the bottom of the 11th, Cal walked off with a single run to win the game.

Game 1: CSUB 0, USD 6

• The 'Runners faced off against San Diego for the first time in program history.
• San Diego's pitching kept Bakersfield's offense quiet, allowing just four hits throughout the game.
• Ryan King Struck out seven to help the Bakersfield on the mound.
• Bakersfield struggled to get anything going and was shut out in a 6-0 loss.

Game 2: CSUB 2, USD 3

• In the second game of the series, Bakersfield struck first in the second inning.
• Shane McAlinden pitched five solid innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
  • As a combined pitching staff the runner struck out five.
• However, Hauze Fragoso gave up two runs in relief, allowing San Diego to secure a 3-2 victory.
• As a team Bakersfield put up two hit to close out the night.

Game 3: CSUB 6, USD 3

• In the final game of the series, Bakersfield came out hot. Evan Cloyd hit a home run to left-center, and after San Diego tied it up, Cloyd added another home run in the third inning to build momentum for the 'Runners.
• Jacob Gutierrez pitched five scoreless innings, keeping San Diego's offense in check.
• Bakersfield continued to score, with Noah Alvarez's single bringing in Tyrese Johnson.
• In the seventh, Elijah Pelayo scored Nick Mascaro on an error, extending the lead to 4-1.
• San Diego attempted a comeback in the seventh but fell short.
• Michael Riley closed out the game with a save, and the 'Runners secured their first-ever win against San Diego with a 6-3 victory.

• Kaia Johnson led the Roadrunners in walks with three over the weekend

• The Cal State Bakersfield swimming and diving teams wrapped up the 2025 Big West Championships a couple weeks ago with nine medals in tow.
• One Roadrunner's season is not yet over as junior Vili Sivec continues to hunt a berth in the NCAA Championships.

CSUB at Bulldog Invitational - Last Chance

• Mar. 1-2, Athens, Ga.
• With multiple times right on the cusp of qualifying for the NCAA Championships, CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen elected to send Vili Sivec to a Last Chance meet hosted by the University of Georgia.
• On Saturday in Athens, Sivec won the 100 Butterfly with a solid time of 45.88, placing ahead of a pack of Bulldogs.
• Closing out the meet on Sunday in the 100 Free, Sivec smashed his own CSUB record by over half a second with a time of 41.98, a mark that sent swimmers to the NCAA Championships a year ago.
• Sivec will now wait and see if he receives an invitation for the national meet with invites expected to go out on Mar. 12. The Top 30 swimmers in each event receive invites and Sivec's 100 Free time has the junior right in the fray.

CSUB 88, LBSU 87 (OT)

• The Roadrunners and the Beach took this one down to the wire, needing over time to decide it
• Jones had 37 points in this game, and called game as time was expiring in overtime with Bakersfield down one point
• The McGhee brothers knocked down clutch threes to open the overtime period, giving Bakersfield momentum to keep up with LBSU as they had some three pointers of their own
• Kadar Waller had 8 points in the victory, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists
• CSUB forced the Beach to commit 13 turnovers converting to 14 points

CSUB 72, Cal Poly 98

• Bakersfield and Cal Poly played a tightly contested first half that was decided by just four points ending 45-41 in favor of the Mustangs
• Marvin McGhee III was on fire making 4-6 threes in the first half and finishing the game with 18 points before departing early due to injury
• Both teams committed 20 or more turnovers, but the Mustangs scored 36 points versus CSUB’s 30 points off turnovers
  • CJ Hardy and Kadar Waller combined for seven steals
• Jemel Jones broke Bakersfield D1 record for single season points early in the first half of the game

• The Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team wrapped up their final home games in the Icardo Center this weekend before heading to Hawai’i for one last road game. Ari Dizon continues to be a standout for the Roadrunners, leading the Big West with 67 total blocks and averaging 2.3 blocks per game. She also ranks 12th in the nation for total blocks and 15th in blocks per game.

CSUB 70, Long Beach State 82

• In Thursday's game, the Roadrunners started strong, scoring 29 points in the first half.
• However, Long Beach State dominated early with 50 points to take a commanding lead.
• Bakersfield fought back in the third quarter, scoring 25 points and closing the gap to just six points by the end of the period.
• Despite their strong effort, the 'Runners couldn't catch up in the fourth, but they posted the highest point total against Long Beach State, who holds an 11-7 overall record.
• Four Bakersfield players scored in double digits, with freshmen Caitie Gingras and Alli Dioli leading the way. Ari Dizon also added four points to her tally to cap off the night.

• CSUB 51, Cal Poly 57
  
  Saturday afternoon marked a bittersweet moment as Bakersfield celebrated four seniors in their final home game against Cal Poly.
• The seniors started alongside Marley Langi, and the team took a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
• Melissa Secchiaroli made an immediate impact, scoring seven points in her first six minutes of play. At halftime, Bakersfield trailed by just three points.
• Despite their best efforts in the second half, they couldn’t catch up to Cal Poly.
• Secchiaroli led the team with 14 points in just 21 minutes of play, while Taylor Caldwell contributed 11 points, five blocks, and two steals in her final game at the Icardo Center.

Gaucho Relays – Saturday, Mar. 1

• The Roadrunner track and field team continued their outdoor season as they travelled to the coast for the Gaucho Relays.
• Jacob Yagers was the highlight of the meet as he broke his own school record in the men’s 3,000-meter race with a new personal best time of 8:30.30. Yagers crossed the finish line five seconds faster than he did just a year ago.
• Javier Toro doubled in the men’s shot put and hammer throw and finished second overall in both events.
• Meshach Davis (100m) and Ethan Lavina (triple jump) both placed third in their respective events.
• Transfer Jaden Cutliff crossed the line in second for the 400m hurdles.  
• On the women’s side, Makiah Parker continues to shine in her young Roadrunner career as she placed first overall in the 100m with a time of 11.79, good for #7 on the CSUB all-time list. Her time qualifies her for the Big West Track and Field Championships in May.
• Emilia Mandela ran a CSUB #6 all-time for the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.20. Mandela also finished second overall in the event.
• Skye Odom placed second overall in the triple jump.
• Other impressive athletes were Griselda Padron in the hammer throw and Rain Gomez in the 3,000m. Padron finished fourth overall in the event with a new CSUB #12 all-time mark. Gomez placed fifth overall with a time of 10:39.16, good for #16 on the CSUB depth charts.
• Both relay teams for the Sprint Medley Relay finished third overall.
• The women’s 4x100m relay squad crossed the finish line in second place.
• CSUB is back in action on Friday and Saturday, Mar.7 and 8, for the Beach Opener hosted by Long Beach State.
