Ferrari Clinches All-American, Drops Semifinal Clash

PHILADELPHIA – Day 2 of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships saw Cal State Bakersfield's AJ Ferrari do something no Roadrunner has done since 2014: clinch All-American honors.

AJ Ferrari, the 3-seed in the 197 pound bracket, earned a spot in the semifinals Friday evening with a 2-0 decision over #6 Mac Stout of Pitt in the morning round. That victory guaranteed the `Runner can place no lower than sixth while the Top 8 wrestlers in each weight class take home All-American bragging rights.

Ferrari has earned the 46th All-American honor in the history of CSUB Wrestling, and the first since 2014 when Bryce Hammond earned a nod at 174 pounds.

In the evening semifinals, Ferrari came up against his toughest foe of the season, #2 Stephan Buchanan (Iowa). Scoreless heading into the third period, Buchanan gained a 1-0 lead on a "locking hands" penalty call, then escaped to make it a 2-0 advantage. Ferrari was unable to come up with the offense he needed and dropped the 3-0 decision after riding time was factored in.

The loss on Friday night was just the second of Ferrari's career and snapped a 39-match win streak, but the `Runner went to social media expressing his desire to finish strong on Saturday.

The final day of the NCAA Championships will kick off at 8 a.m. (PT) at the Wells Fargo Center. Fans can follow along as Ferrari goes for third place live on ESPNU and ESPN+.

Bakersfield's 197-pounder will first face #15 Joseph Novak (Wyoming), who also lost to Buchanan but by an 8-1 score. Depending on results, Ferrari will then tackle either #12 Stephen Little (Little Rock) or #1 Jacob Cardenas (Michigan) with potential placements from third through sixth.

Ferrari was not the only `Runner competing on Friday as Bakersfield native Jake Andrews made it through to Day 2 in the heavyweight bracket. Andrews' season came to a close Friday morning with a consolation bracket loss against Pac-12 rival Trevor Tinker.

Coming into the year with a 16-48 career record, Andrews posted a breakthrough season including a 24-5 record and his first NCAA Championships appearance. The true senior wrapped up his `Runner career with his best effort, making all of Kern County proud of the Frontier High School graduate.
