3-Time NCAA Qualifier Nijenhuis Joins CSUB Wrestling

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield's Head Wrestling Coach, Luke Smith, has announced another addition to his 2024-25 roster in three-time NCAA Qualifier Gerrit Nijenhuis.

"We are excited to welcome Gerrit to the team," Smith said of the experienced wrestler. "Gerrit has had some big wins over All-Americans and been to the NCAA Championships three times. We look forward to helping him make his push for the podium this year."
Heading into his fifth collegiate season, Nijenhuis opted to leave the University of Oklahoma after a pair of successful seasons. During the 2022-23 season as the Sooners' starting 165 pounder, Nijenhuis posted a 16-9 record on the way to his third-straight NCAA Championships appearance. Moving up to 174 pounds last year, Nijenhuis finished with a 7-7 record while placing at three tournaments, including the Southern Scuffle.

The two seasons prior, Nijenhuis was a member of the team at Purdue. The native of Canonsburg, Pa. split time between 165 and 174 as a Boilermaker as well, qualifying for the NCAA Championships at both weight classes. In two seasons in West Lafayette, Ind., Nijenhuis tallied a 39-21 record while ranking as high as No. 13 in the country during the 2021-22 season.

The season veteran brings a valuable experience to the `Runners and will play a key factor in Cal State Bakersfield returning to prominence in the wrestling world.
