Hansen Announces 2023-24 Swim & Dive Schedules

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield Director of Swimming Chris Hansen has announced the 2023-24 Swimming & Diving schedules as the Roadrunner men's and women's team's look forward to another successful season. CSUB will compete in three invitationals and six duals during the upcoming regular season. The slate will ultimately prepare the squad for the MPSF Championships and postseason opportunities while some `Runners have their eyes on Olympic qualification.

Bakersfield will open the season at the John S. Hillman Aquatic Center once again, hosting the CSUB Sprint Classic and the Roadrunner Invite on Oct. 13 & 14, respectively. After duals against UC San Diego, Claremont-Mudd-Sripps, and Pacific, the `Runners will prepare for a return trip to the highly-competitive Big Al Invitational in Princeton, N.J.

"We are excited to be heading back to Princeton, which was by far our best meet as a team in my tenure here at CSUB," said Hansen. "It will be a tougher meet this year with the addition of Penn State, UPenn, and UNC Chapel Hill in attendance. Denver, George Washington, and Columbia will also be back with Princeton and CSUB. We will have to race hard and smart to get second swims."

Hansen, who heads into his 16th season at CSUB this Fall, also discussed the overall schedule and how it prepares his team for elite competition: "For us to get to race so many Top 25 teams is just going to make us better. It being an Olympic year, everything will be a little more intense. Princeton will host a pre-Olympic Trials meet the day before the Invite, which will be a great experience for some of our top swimmers who need a long course meet."

After the winter trip to Princeton, CSUB will take on duals against UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, and Fresno State before transitioning into a period of postseason preparation.

Bakersfield's end-of-year run begins with the program's final MPSF Championship Meet as the `Runners recently learned that the Big West will welcome swimming and diving as a sponsored sport starting in the 2024-25 season. On Feb. 21-24, the `Runners will enjoy their final crack at claiming more MPSF titles in the conference meet in St. George, Utah.

"We are so excited to enter the Big West. It's important to us to be with all our teams in the same conference. This will be our team's fifth conference change since I've been here: Conference USA, MPSF, WAC, MPSF and now The Big West, which has always been our goal. We want to go out with a bang! All the teams entering The Big West are in the MPSF, so I think this is going to be a showcase on what is to come. The MPSF has a lot of teams; I think a smaller, intimate Big West is going to be a much faster meet."

The Women's NCAA Championship meet will be hosted in Athens, Ga., from Mar. 13-16, while the Men's National Championship will be held the following week in Indianapolis, Ind., Mar. 20-23. Before and after NCAAs and the National Invitational Championships, Hansen plans to send select student-athletes to some TYR Pro Series meets.
