Munsey Hits 6th Homer, CSUB Falls in Finale 7-4

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Despite Karissa Munsey's sixth homer of the season and standout performances by a pair of Roadrunner seniors, the Cal State Bakersfield softball team was unable to take a win in the series finale against Long Beach State on Sunday. CSUB battled back from two-run deficits twice, but the visiting Beach, who rank second in The Big West standings, held off the `Runners for a 7-4 victory on Bakersfield's Senior Day.

Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "I'm really pleased with how we played today and how we played all weekend. The ball just didn't bounce our way this weekend."
  • "We hit the ball really well this weekend. We competed hard. I think we've come so far this season, I think it's evident to everybody who's watching. We just need to finish games now, but we're competing every time."
  • About seniors Carla Duarte, Samantha Martinez, and Savanna Montoya: "They're all very thoughtful, very mature, and very level-headed. They care a lot and they compete hard. They set a great example for our team. We couldn't ask for more from those three."
CSUB 4, LBSU 7
  • The Beach jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Munsey, Bakersfield's starting first baseman, sent a two-run homer down the left field line in the bottom of the first. She is now one home run away from tying for fifth in CSUB's Division I single-season history with seven.
  • In the top of the third, LBSU got a two-RBI triple out of Teah Theis to make the score 4-2.
  • The `Runners answered right back in the bottom half of the third, tying the score at four runs apiece on senior Samantha Martinez's two-RBI double.
  • A two-out error by CSUB prolonged the top of the sixth inning and LSBU went on to plate three unearned runs and take a 7-4 lead.
  • Kirsten Martinez took an unfortunate loss, allowing just two earned runs over six innings of work in the circle.
  • Montoya went 2-for-4 on her Senior Day, scoring both times she reached base.
  • Munsey is now hitting .327 in Big West play and has a team-high 18 RBI on the season.
