Late Rally Falls Short as CSUB Drops DH in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Battling on the road in a Big West doubleheader, the Cal State Bakersfield softball team came up short against UC Riverside on Friday afternoon. The Roadrunner offense struggled to get going until late in the day as the Highlanders earned a pair of victories on their home field.

Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "Riverside played with a lot of energy and focus today. They got a great start in Game 1 and had great at bats all day."
  • "We made a couple mistakes in Game 1 that turned a hard-fought game into a larger margin, but I'm pleased with how we pitched and defended overall."
  • "Game 2 was a mirror image; we didn't pitch as well and UCR took advantage. We hit balls hard all day long and had some bad luck with balls right at defenders, plus hitting into some excellent defensive plays."
  • "It wasn't our day, but we'll look to finish strong and carry momentum into the offseason -- as well as honor seniors Sam, Sav, and Carla -- with one last good performance."
CSUB 0, UCR 6
  • UC Riverside recorded two runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, gradually building up a 6-0 advantage.
  • In the third and fourth innings, CSUB put a `Runner in scoring position but was unable to plate them in either frame.
  • Bakersfield's offense could not get rolling against UCR's Maddie Heinlin, who tallied 11 strikeouts in the complete-game shutout.
  • Ciara Jensen went 2-for-3 at the plate in the opening contest.
CSUB 2, UCR 7
  • Just as they did in Game 1, the Highlanders steadily grew a large lead, taking a 7-0 advantage after four innings.
  • CSUB struck for its first run of the day in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Bakersfield native Jordan Head.
  • In the top of the seventh, the `Runners loaded the bases with two outs. Tayler Thomas delivered an RBI single to make the score 7-2, but the CSUB rally was cut short.
  • Catcher Maya Molina-Villareal went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the second half of the twin bill.
