Montoya & Munsey Receive All-Big West Honors

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Big West announced the results of the Head Softball Coaches' voting for year-end awards Tuesday afternoon, and a pair of Roadrunners received All-Big West Honorable Mention. Savanna Montoya and Karissa Munsey both earned votes for their performances in conference play in the 2023 season.
 
Munsey, a true sophomore, powered her way into receiving All-Big West honors. Hitting .282 in Big West play, Munsey tallied 20 hits, 11 RBI, 34 total bases, a .479 slugging percentage, a .333 on-base percentage, and a .812 OPS. Seven of the 20 hits went for extra bases, four of which left the yard. Munsey's four home runs was good enough to rank her third in conference play. The native of Fontana, Calif. played a huge part in the Bakersfield offense this season with clutch moments like her go-ahead Grand Slam versus UNLV early in the year. Munsey had two standout series, first versus UCSB where she went 5-for-9 with a home run, and versus Hawai'i going 5-for-10.
 
Montoya, a two-year starter at CSUB, batted .242 with 16 hits in league games. Of those 16 knocks, she was able to turn six of those into doubles, which was good for third most in the conference. Montoya shined in the series versus Hawai'i where she went 5-for-10 with four doubles and one RBI, helping the Roadrunners to an 8-5 victory over the Rainbow Wahine. In her final game of the Long Beach State series, Montoya went 2-for-3 with two runs. Earlier in the season, Montoya also earned All-Tournament honors in the UTEP Invitational after her 3-for-6 effort, which included a triple, a home run, an RBI, and scoring two runs.
 
Montoya is graduating next Fall and will serve as an undergraduate assistant at CSUB for the 2023-24 season before pursuing graduate school with plans to become an occupational therapist or physician's assistant. Munsey will be returning next season for her junior year and she will figure to play a huge part of the Bakersfield offense moving forward with veteran leadership.
