Comnos and Salas Set New Career-Highs in Loss to UCI

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The second contest of the UC Irvine series was a statement opportunity for the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team, as the Roadrunners tried desperately to pull themselves out of this recent slump. In a tightly contested affair, Matt Comnos and Nick Salas set new single-game career highs, but CSUB was unable to mount a response after the Anteaters took the lead in the fourth inning with the `Runners losing Game 2 by a score of 4-1.

Notables
  • Matt Comnos pitched winning baseball despite CSUB's offense trailing behind UCI for most of the game, notching a new single-game career-high strikeouts number with 8 K's on the evening.
  • Nick Salas had a perfect night with his pitch awareness, taking walks in all four at-bats, which is also a new single-game career-high for him.
  • Cody Hendriks continued his recent success with another solid night of hitting, going 2-for-4, while Kyler Stancato also showed up on the box score with another 2-for-4 with a run as well.
Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "You're only as good as your pitching and bullpen at times, and tonight Matt Comnos did a great job keeping us in the game and giving us a chance to win. Up until the eighth inning, we didn't offer them much… All-in-all, it was a really good baseball game between two team wanting to win the game."
  • "Our guys continue to fight. They respect the program, philosophy, and what we are trying to accomplish here. We know where we stand in the Big West right now, as a team continuing to grow and get better. This is an extremely competitive conference."
CSUB 1, UCI 6
  • Early into the game, CSUB's defense stood strong to prevent an opening inning run with a Jared Bujanda-McConnell, Cody Hendriks, and Matthew Kurata relay throw at home plate.
  • UC Irvine opened up the scoring with a home run in the third inning. CSUB answered in the next half-inning with a sac fly from Matthew Kurata to send Kyler Stancato in and tie the game.
  • The Anteaters were able to take the lead again after capitalizing on a few key CSUB errors, which put UC Irvine up 3-1 in the fourth inning.
  • UC Irvine was able to get another sac fly and coinciding home run to extend the lead 5-1 before adding more the next inning, leading 6-1 before CSUB's final at-bats.
