`Runners Unable to Recover from Early Gael Surge

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With the second game of the split-series against Saint Mary's (CA), the Cal State Bakersfield baseball team was looking for similar success to the first game back in February. However, the Gaels started hot and never looked back, pulling ahead 11-0 through the first three innings. The `Runners fought hard to stay in the game with RBIs from Riley Kasper and Walker Moore, but the early Saint Mary's lead was too much to overcome with the Gaels winning 14-2. CSUB now looks ahead to staying at home for a series against UC Irvine.

Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "Well, sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windshield. Tonight, our guys on the mound weren't sharp. Saint Mary's did a nice job of piecing up some balls and took advantage of some poor pitching early in the game. Eleven runs in the first set [of three innings] is tough to overcome."
  • "What we wanted to do is get some rotational guys in the game, but we had to stop the bleeding early. At that point, we were on our heels, and it was tough to come back from. It just made for a long night."
CSUB 2, SMC 14
  • The second batter, Bill Ralston, for Saint Mary's homered in the top of the first inning, and the Gaels built upon that lead in the second and third innings, singling one-after-another to lead 11-0 through three.
  • Trevor Pruitt came into the third inning as the second reliever for the `Runners and finally settled things down a bit, pitching CSUB's first two scoreless defensive innings.
  • Riley Kasper hit a double to bat one run in and breath some life into CSUB during the fifth inning. Saint Mary's still led 11-1 through five, but the `Runners finally got the monkey off their back with that run.
  • Jeter Scheurman, who came to the mound in relief during the seventh inning, made his first appearance in a month after recovering from an injury. He went on to sit down his first three batters in order.
  • Walker Moore singled to center field in the bottom of the ninth to give CSUB a desperation run in the comeback attempt.
