`Runners Win Game 2, Nearly Take Series from Hawai'i

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After dropping Game 1 of the Big West series 7-1 against Hawai'i on Friday, Cal State Bakersfield came out on Saturday looking like a team on a mission. The Roadrunner softball team stormed back to even the series with an 8-4 win in the middle of the game of the series. CSUB then battled the Rainbow Wahine all the way down to the final pitch, watching a would-have-been, walk-off, three-run, series-winning homer go a couple feet foul before dropping a 3-1 decision in the rubber match.

Notables
  • Bakersfield (7-34, 2-16 BW) came into the weekend 0-6 all-time against Hawai'i and nearly took the series from the 'Bows (28-16, 11-7 BW).
  • CSUB looked to Savanna Montoya and Karissa Munsey to lead the offense this weekend. Montoya went 5-for-10 with four doubles while also tracking down 12 fly balls in center field. Munsey also went 5-for-10 while tallying five RBI in the series.
  • Jocelynn Molina also heated up, going 3-for-7 from the plate while holding down third base with a steady glove.
Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl

  • "I thought we played really well yesterday, despite the score. We knew if we came and we fought today and we eliminated some of those bigger innings against, that we would have a chance to win games today. They showed up and answered the call and did exactly what we asked them to do."
  • "Both Reina and Kirsten were exceptional this weekend at challenging hitters and working ahead. That really led to what we did on offense and what we were able to do on defense."
  • "Savanna and Karissa have been great all year. Since we started conference play, Munsey has been driving the ball…I think she's really become an important part in the upper-middle part of our lineup as a run producer."
  • "I think this weekend proves to our team that, when we stay together, when we're focused, and when our effort and energy is there, we will have a chance to win games. We had our chance today; we missed it by a couple feet, but we were in that position because we did so much right on the defensive side of the ball."

CSUB 8, Hawai'i 4
  • Hawai'i took an early, 1-0 lead on a solo homer from Maya Nakamura in the top of the first inning.
  • The `Runners capitalized on a throwing error by UH in the bottom of the second to tie up the game when Samantha Martinez scored from second.
  • The Rainbow Wahine used a pair of doubles to put three runs up on the scoreboard, taking a 4-1 lead after three and a half innings.
  • Bakersfield rallied in the bottom half of the third, posting four runs thanks to four hits. Kaia Johnson's double to the right field wall gave the CSUB offense a big spark and the scoring spurt was capped by an RBI single from shortstop Jordan Head.
  • Savanna Montoya hit her third double of the weekend in the bottom of the fourth, then promptly scored on Karissa Munsey's RBI single to extend Bakersfield's advantage to 6-4.
  • After Hawai'i's outburst in the third inning, Reina Castillo and the `Runner defense retired seven-straight 'Bows and 10 of the next 11.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, CSUB scored two more to make it 8-4 on a double from Munsey.
  • In the circle, Castillo picked up a complete-game victory. The sophomore from Rialto, Calif. scattered 10 hits over the seven innings, but did not allow a walk to the 'Bows in the win.
  • Munsey went 3-for-4 with five RBI on the game, catalyzing the CSUB offense.
CSUB 1, Hawai'i 3
  • For the third-straight game, Hawai'i scored in the first inning, putting two runs up on the scoreboard.
  • CSUB starting pitcher Kirsten Martinez helped the `Runners keep the 'Bows quiet over the next three innings.
  • Bakersfield capitalized on a pair of UH errors in the bottom of the fourth as Samantha Martinez scored, making the score 2-1.
  • Hawai'i responded with a run of their own in the top of fifth, extending their advantage to 3-1.
  • Bakersfield had two `Runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Shaylene Fuimaono ripped a ball down the left field line that would have won the series for CSUB, but it just barely drifted foul. Hawai'i's Brianna Lopez got a strikeout to end the threat and shut the door on the `Runner rally.
  • Kirsten Martinez suffered the loss despite pitching well, scattering eight hits and a walk while only allowing two earned runs.
