CSUB Outhit CSUN in Game 2, Dropped Doubleheader

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – After a slow start in the first game of Friday's Big West doubleheader, the CSU Bakersfield softball team rallied to battle a solid CSUN squad on the road. The Roadrunners outhit the Matadors in Game 2 of the twinbill, but CSUN held off CSUB to take the pair of games, 8-0 and 3-1.

Notables
  • Redshirt sophomore Kailey Samora went 2-for-3 with a walk on the day. The outfielder came into Game 1 as a defensive substitute and earned a starting nod in Game 2.
  • Karissa Munsey, Bakersfield's hottest hitter as of late, went 2-for-6 and scored the lone run of the day for CSUB.
  • Across two games of action, CSUB pitcher Brianna Sanchez threw 6.1 innings of work, allowing just three earned runs while striking out two Matadors.
Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "I thought we bounced back well in Game 2. We pitched really well all day, but our defensive effort wasn't our best and we didn't get the timely hits offensively despite some good at bats."
CSUB 0, CSUN 8 (6 inn.)
  • A leadoff triple to start the bottom of the second catalyzed a two-run inning as the Matadors took an early lead over the `Runners.
  • CSUN tallied four-straight singles to begin the third inning, eventually scoring four runs in the frame and extending its lead to 6-0.
  • Ciara Jensen's single in the top of the fifth broke up CSUN's Lauryn Carranco's perfect game. In the sixth, Kailey Samora reached third base with two outs after a single of her own, but the `Runners were unable to bring her around to score.
  • The Matadors plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the run-rule victory, 8-0.
  • Carranco, CSUN's ace, struck out 11 `Runners while scattering two hits in the dominant win.
CSUB 1, CSUN 3
  • Bakersfield jumped out of the gate quickly, plating its only run of the day on Samantha Martinez's RBI single in the top of the first.
  • CSUN tied the score in the bottom of the first thanks to a fielding error. The Matadors then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout.
  • The home team tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the 3-1 victory.
  • Bakersfield's pitching duo of Brianna Sanchez and Kirsten Martinez was effective against the Matadors, allowing just two earned runs over six innings of work.
  • The `Runner offense outhit CSUN 6-3 in the second game, but failed to get timely hitting when it needed it.
