CSUB Wrestlers Compete at Pac-12 Championships

STANFORD, Calif. – Hindered by injuries at key weight classes, the Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team was unable to perform to its full potential at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday. Despite the struggles, two Roadrunners outperformed their expected seeds as Eddie Flores and Jacob Hansen earned fifth-place finishes.

Notables
  • Flores and Hansen were two of five `Runners who placed fifth at the league Championships.
  • At 125 pounds, Flores dropped a pair of hard-fought decisions before winning the fifth-place match against Little Rock's Jeremiah Reno, 10-5.
  • CSUB's 149-pounder Josh Brown suffered a similar fate in his first two bouts, but Brown finished strong with a 6-3 win over Riley Gurr of Oregon State.
  • Brown closed out his season with a team-high 17 victories.
  • Hansen (184) closed the tournament with a 56-second pin of Mason Diel (ULR).
  • Bakersfield finished sixth of six teams with 58.0 points.
Quotes from Head Coach Luke Smith
  • "It was definitely disappointing overall, but we had some guys finish out strong."
  • "Eddie wrestled really well and Brown has come a long way. Hansen finished his season with a nice pin."
  • "Albert was wrestling really well, so him getting injured was a tough way to finish the season. He had the No. 1 seed exhausted and took him down to the wire. It says a lot about how tough he is that he wrestled the last minute and a half on possibly a broken ankle."
  • "Chance was trying to grit through. He's getting healthier, but kind of reaggravated an issues he's been dealing with. Hopefully he gets an at-large bid because we can have him ready to go by NCAAs. He's a two-time qualifier who finished Top 16 and Top 12, so he deserves to be there."
  • "At this level, it's hard when you're not 100% to just tough things out, especially being at a Power 5 conference like the Pac-12."
  • "We've got to get healthy and we've just got to look to continue to improve and build. There's a lot of potential on this team. We're right in there with some guys who are qualifying and have wins against All-Americans, we just have to be able to win those matches consistently."
 Up Next on the Schedule
  • CSUB will await to learn of any potential at-large bids for the NCAA Championships
  • Mar. 16-18, 2023
  • Tulsa, Okla.
