10 Strikeouts Not Enough to Slow Hot UCSB Squad

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Despite outhitting UC Santa Barbara and the Roadrunner pitching staff tallying 10 strikeouts, CSU Bakersfield was unable to slow the Gauchos in Saturday evening's Big West baseball game. The `Runners trailed early and were unable to catch up to the red-hot UCSB squad that is now 14-3 on the year after a 4-2 win over CSUB (7-10, 0-2 BW).

Quotes from Head Coach Jeremy Beard
  • "We had another excellent pitching performance today by our staff. That's an excellent offensive team and we held the game tight again."
  • "We need timely hits and more run production, but our guys took better swings and had quality at bats today. We outhit them and had hard-hit balls at them today."
  • "I am proud of our ball club and the growth that we have been taking on during a difficult stretch."
CSUB 2, UCSB 4
  • UCSB jumped out to an early lead thanks to a two-run home run from Christian Kirtley in the bottom of the first inning.
  • CSUB starting pitcher Matt Comnos settled down after the first-inning miscue, keeping the score 2-0 while recording seven strikeouts through the first four frames.
  • Kyler Stancato broke up UCSB's perfect game with a single in the top of the fourth, but the `Runners got their first run in the fifth. With AJ Miller on second base, Konnor Palmeira picked up an RBI single as CSUB cut the Gaucho lead in half, 2-1.
  • The Gauchos loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and walked in a run to go ahead 3-1, but reliever Tally Wright Jr. got the `Runners out of the jam with a strikeout.
  • UCSB extended its lead to 4-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the `Runners got that run back on Stancato's RBI double in the top of the eight.
  • Down to their final out, Riley Kasper gave the `Runners some life with a single. Matthew Kurata's line drive looked like it would keep the rally going, but a diving play in right field ended the game.
  • Comnos (2-2) recorded seven of CSUB's 10 strikeouts on the day.
  • Stancato went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Palmeira finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI of his own.
  • CSUB tallied seven hits to UCSB's six, but the Gauchos enjoyed six walks at the plate compared to none for the `Runners.
