CSUB Drops a Pair of Doubleheader Games to UCSD

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Opening up Big West play with a home doubleheader, the Cal State Bakersfield softball team dropped a pair of games to UC San Diego. The Roadrunners battled the visiting Tritons, but Bakersfield's offense was slow to get rolling in the twin bill.

Quotes from Head Coach Dan Sperl
  • "I thought we did a good job with our runners and at-bats all day, honestly. We hit some hard ground balls, but they were right at their infielders. Their pitchers did a good job keeping the ball in the strike zone and forcing us to hit grounders."
  • "We need to do a better job playing with confidence on that [defensive] side of the game. When balls are put in play, we need to pick them up and get our outs without trying to do too much. We knew they wanted to run, and we worked on it in practice; we just have to trust each other."
CSUB 0, UCSD 3
  • The Tritons struck first, plating an unearned run in the top of the second.
  • Bakersfield threatened in the bottom of the fourth, putting two `Runners on base with one out, but UCSD got out of trouble to keep a 1-0 lead.
  • The visitors doubled their lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth…
  • Ciara Jensen's double in the bottom of the sixth gave Bakersfield a good scoring opportunity, but the `Runners were unable to move the second baseman around.
  • Jensen went 2-for-2 with a walk and a double in the series opener.
  • Shaylene Fuimaono went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
  • CSUB starting pitcher Brianna Sanchez threw her seventh complete game of the season. The junior transfer scattered eight hits while allowing two earn runs and tying a season-high five strikeouts.
  • UCSD's Gabby Williams earned the win, pitching five scoreless innings. Kaia Simpson closed out the final two innings, earning a save and preserving the Triton shutout.
CSUB 1, UCSD 8
  • UCSD struck early again, this time putting four runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first before making it a 7-0 score after the second inning.
  • The Tritons plated their eighth run in the top of the third, setting up a run-rule opportunity.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, Maya Williams scored on a double from Jensen, making the score 8-1.
  • Bakersfield forced the game all the way to the seventh inning. UCSD pitcher Jada Cecil closed out the seven-run victory with a complete game in which she scattered three hits and struck out eight `Runners.
  • On the other side of the scorecard, CSUB's Kirsten Martinez threw her third complete game of the year, allowing just three earned runs as Bakersfield's defense struggled to support its pitcher.
  • Jensen finished Day 1 of Big West play 3-for-5 with a walk and a pair of doubles.
