CSUB Bats Come Alive to Run Rule UCSD

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield softball team rebounded nicely on Friday after dropping a pair of games versus the Tritons the day before. Today the Roadrunners were led by great hitting and a great pitching performance from Brianna Sanchez for a complete team win. Bakersfield achieved its first run-rule victory since March 20, 2016, versus Santa Clara, downing UC San Diego 10-2 in five innings.

CSUB 10, UCSD 2 (5 inn.)
  • UCSD got on the board in the first inning, but CSUB starting pitcher Brianna Sanchez limited the damage to just one run.
  • Bakersfield loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second. CSUB scored the equalizer on a fielding error by the Tritons before three-straight two-out singles made the score 5-1. The `Runners enjoyed RBI base hits from Maya Williams, Shaylene Fuimaono, and Ciara Jensen.
  • CSUB extended its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third when Savanna Montoya slid under a tag at home plate on an RBI from Maya Molina-Villareal.
  • In the fourth inning, Montoya launched a three-run home run to left field to extend the `Runners lead to 9 - 1.
  • Bakersfield had the run rule in effect going into the top of the fifth, but the Tritons were able to get one run and keep the game alive.
  • Down with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jensen roped a double into the gap plating Williams to win the game.
Quotes from Head Coach Dan Sperl
  • "I am really pleased with how we showed up today, we were business-like in warmups we were focused and brought that into the game. We were consistent the whole game and we continued to be the aggressor."
  • "We stayed after them, stayed aggressive, stayed hungry and we continued to hit and piled on every chance we got. It felt really good to finish the series that way. I felt that the series was pretty even all weekend. The first game could have gone either way, last night they got us in the first innings, but we settled in the rest of the way, and today we got them."
  • "Ciara has been a great pickup for us, she is a great hitter at this level. Hopefully, this weekend is a coming out party for her, and can count on her the rest of the way."
  • "Bri has been fantastic all year long. She finds a way to compete and gives us a chance every time she is out there."
