CSUB Softball Splits Home Openers with Pacific

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Rebounding nicely from a loss in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against Pacific, the Cal State Bakersfield softball team closed out the day with a split of the twin bill. Behind the bats of Shaylene Fuimaono and Karissa Munsey, as well as the crafty pitching of Brianna Sanchez, the Roadrunners downed the Tigers in Game 2 of what ended up being CSUB's unexpected home openers.

Notables
  • CSUB (5-18) and Pacific (6-13) were originally scheduled to play a three-game series up north in Stockton, Calif., but heavy rain and risk of flooding forced a change in the schedule. Bakersfield ended up hosting a doubleheader at the Roadrunner Softball Complex, the team's first home games of the year.
  • Fuimaono and Munsey, a pair of sophomore infielders, both went 3-for-6 at the plate on Sunday while Fuimaono tallied all four of Bakersfield's RBI.
  • Sanchez, who transferred to CSUB from New Mexico this year, pitched a complete-game victory in the second game of the day, catching the Tiger hitters off guard with a great mix off pitches.
Quotes
  • "We bounced back well in Game 2 behind an excellent pitching performance from Brianna Sanchez. I liked the way we swung the bats in the nightcap; we jumped right on them in the first. But I'm most pleased with how we continued to string together good ABs all game. We need to find more consistency from game to game, but when we play our best, we have proved we can be competitive." – Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "We made more adjustments up to bat [in the second game]. We knew what we needed to do and we just needed to perform. We wanted to come out and win…I've just been trusting my eyes and seeing the ball really well. I know that the other hitters have my back if I get on." – Karissa Munsey
  • "I think we came in with a clean slate [after the loss]. We obviously came out swinging, which was really good. It's not good to come in thinking about the past…It's always nice knowing [my teammates] are behind me with their bats. They have a job to do and I have a job to do as well…I know there was some innings where I was a little bit shaky, but it was nice to know the defense was behind me and I could count on them."
CSUB 1, Pacific 6
  • The Tigers slowly but steadily built up a 6-0 lead, plating their final run of the first game in the top of the seventh.
  • Pacific pitcher Vanessa Strong kept the `Runner offense quiet, allowing no runs on three hits and five strikeouts through six innings of work.
  • CSUB finally cracked the door in the bottom of the seventh against the Tigers' reliever. The `Runners tallied one run on three hits in the final frame as Fuimaono recorded an RBI single that scored freshman Jay Reeves.
  • Pacific closed out the 6-1 win, getting back-to-back outs after the run scored and quashing the CSUB rally.
  • Munsey went 2-for-3 in the contest and Samantha Martinez also went 2-for-3 while keeping busy at second base with four putouts and two assists.
  • Bakersfield sophomore Reina Castillo took the loss in Game 1, pitching a complete game and allowing four earned runs while striking out three Tigers.
CSUB 5, Pacific 2
  • Just as they did in the first game of the day, Pacific jumped out to an early, 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • This time around, the `Runners wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, plating four runs in the bottom half of the frame. CSUB's offense went to work against the Tigers' Amiyah Aponte, who came into the contest with a 1.15 ERA in five previous appearances. Bakersfield knocked Aponte out of the game before she recorded a single out.
  • Senior Maya Williams got the `Runner rally started with a leadoff double and Fuimaono later drove in two of her teammates with another big single. Ciara Jensen, earning her second start of the season, capped the scoring when she raced home from third on a wild pitch.
  • Pacific got one run back in the top of the second before Sanchez really settled into a groove. The right-handed pitcher allowed just one hit over the next three innings to keep Bakersfield ahead, 4-2.
  • The `Runners extended their advantage to 5-2 when Fuimaono led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run down the left field line.
  • Sanchez came back out in the top of the seventh, along with batterymate Maya Molina-Villareal, and completed the complete game victory. The duo needed just seven pitches to record the final three outs. Sanchez allowed just one earned run off six hits and two walks while striking out four Tigers in the win.
