'Runners Set to Host Final Two Home Duals of Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With just three duals remaining and less than a month before the Pac-12 and NCAA championships, the Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team host one conference and non-conference opponent for the final two home duals of the season. With time running out on the regular season, the Roadrunners will be searching, against either No. 24 Stanford or California Baptist this week, for their first home dual win in the last three years.

Upcoming Schedule
  • vs Stanford, Feb. 10
  • vs California Baptist, Feb. 12
Quotes from Head Coach Luke Smith
  • "We have to focus on getting our offense to make adjustments, score points, and just compete. If we're at the NCAA tournament, you might have a tough loss, but you have to pick yourself up if you want to be an All-American. We have to focus on battling back and winning every next match."
  • "We still have more opportunities ahead of us, so we need to learn from our losses and keep getting better. If we embrace the process and continue getting better every time we step on the mat, we'll see an overall improvement. Hopefully we can keep improving and bring the best versions of ourselves in March."
`Runner Notes
  • After pushing Cal Poly to the brink last week, a tired and recovering `Runners squad was defeated by Little Rock just two days later. In a tight one against the Mustangs, CSUB showed plenty of potential about what its full, healthy team can do against even top competition.
  • Josh Brown was on a tear, holding a 6-dual win streak heading into Little Rock before finally being defeated via pin. This streak included an amazing opening dual win against Cal Poly's No. 17 Dom Demas, Brown's first ranked victory this season.
  • With head coach Luke Smith fully focused on the road ahead, CSUB will not only be looking to get the "monkey off its back" with a home dual win for the first time since 2019-20, but Smith is even more importantly concerned with preparation for the end-season tournaments.

Scouting the Cardinal
  • Stanford (5-4, 1-1 Pac-12) is led by second-year head coach Rob Koll.
  • CSUB is just the third conference opponent that the Cardinal will have faced so far this season. They beat Little Rock in a close matchup but also dropped a large loss against Arizona State.
  • Stanford is the sixth ranked dual opponent the `Runners have played this calendar year. Although CSUB has yet to beat a ranked opponent, with only one dual win on the season against Central Michigan, the `Runners will be hungry for a win in preparation for March.
  • At 149, No. 11 Jaden Abas will most likely come up against the CSUB's hottest wrestler at the moment, Josh Brown, who most recently upset the No. 17 wrestler in their weight class.
  • The Cardinal also have the No. 3 wrestler at 165, Shane Griffith, and four other honorable mentions by FloWrestling's rankings.

Scouting the Lancers
  • California Baptist (2-11, 1-6 Big-12) is led by first-year head coach Derek Moore.
  • The Lancers have never beaten CSUB in the all-time series history. The `Runners have won all 11 duals, including last year's 20-19 nailbiter that went from a 13-0 CSUB lead to 19-13 CBU potential comeback before Bakersfield sealed the last two bouts with enough points to win.
  • Frank Almaguer, the only "ranked" wrestler from CBU's projected lineup, was given an honorable mention spot in FloWrestling's rankings, and he will most likely come up against CSUB's Braden Smelser.
  • Most recently, the Lancers were shut out by Northern Iowa, 44-0, and have only won one dual this calendar year, like the `Runners. This should be an interesting matchup with momentum implications for both squads.
