Bakersfield Fights Weather on Day 1 in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Multiple weather-related delays and interruptions made for a rocky first day of golf at The Causeway Invitational on Monday. The CSU Bakersfield women's golf team struggled to find a rhythm in the bumpy round as the field was only able to finish 20 of 36 scheduled holes of golf.

Notables
  • Originally scheduled for a 54-hole tournament, The Causeway Invitational may now become a 36-hole event. Tomorrow, the Roadrunners and their competition will close out the second that they started on Monday, but they may need to begin traveling home before a third round can be completed.
  • A long rain delay caused the initial disruption in play on Monday. Three hours later, the student-athletes were finally able to get back out on the course, but a lightening delay pulled them off again later in the day.
  • Three `Runners scored in the 70s to lead CSUB, but Bakersfield finished the first round of play in 13th place out of 13 teams. The strong field features three teams that competed in postseason play in 2022: Washington, BYU, and Cal.

Quotes from Head Coach Tiffanie Yabut
  • "The team showed great resiliency and steadiness in our first nine holes, battling through heavy rain and high winds. We had two rain delays, the first being three hours, which made it a struggle for us mentally and physically to get in a rhythm for the back nine."
  • "We had some course management issues and didn't adapt well from the delays, which cost us a lot. We're not far off from a lot of strong teams, so our plan is to finish strong and make a move up the leaderboard tomorrow."
Day 1
  • CSUB freshman Sarah Mutai and junior Jefi Dordevic paced the `Runners in Round 1 with scores of 78.
  • Arlene Salvador came back to the clubhouse with a first-round score of 79.
  • Christy Mae Saban, making her first start of the season, rounded out the CSUB Scoring Four with a round of 81, her best competitive score since October of 2021.
  • Freshman Iris Han posted a card of 86 on Monday.
  • At the end of Round 1, CSUB sat just two strokes behind Wyoming.
