Xavier Johnson Selected to WBCA Next Generation Institute

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball associate head coach Xavier Johnson was selected to participate in the inaugural WBCA Next Generation Institute — a new high-level education program for experienced assistant coaches who aspire to become head coaches at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels, as announced by the WBCA Tuesday morning.

The Next Generation Institute curriculum focuses on the CEO attributes needed to lead a program and be a problem-solver in today's ever-changing landscape of higher education and the enterprise of intercollegiate athletics.

To be eligible for selection to participate in the program, a person must be a current WBCA member, must have at least five years' experience as a college assistant coach, and must have been nominated by their head coach. Participants will meet prior to (virtually), during (in person) and after (virtually) the 2023 WBCA Convention. The convention takes place March 31–April 2 in Dallas.

Johnson is just one of 21 assistant coaches to be selected to participate in the inaugural next generation institute. Johnson has been at CSUB since the 2013-14 season when he was an assistant coach on Greg McCall's staff before getting the nod for associate head coach before the 2014-15 campaign. Previously, he was on men's team head coach Rod Barnes' staff at Mississippi where he assisted with recruiting, practice, and film from 2001-03 before coaching prep high school ball.
