`Runners Can't Slow Matador Offense on the Road

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – A physical defensive effort was not enough on Thursday for the Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball team against Big West foe CSUN. The Roadrunners clawed their way into a close game down the stretch, but the Matadors used a highly-efficient shooting clip to hold off their visitors and close out a 75-68 win in Southern California.

  • CSUB turned 20 CSUN turnovers into 20 points on Thursday night, but the `Runners struggled in their halfcourt offense.
  • Bakersfield shot 35% from the field while CSUN's hot hands converted on a 50% clip.

First Half
  • Sparked by 10 points from Collum in the first eight minutes of the game, the `Runners jumped out to a 15-9 advantage on the road.
  • The two teams traded leads three times in the middle section of the first half, but a 13-2 CSUN run put the host team ahead 31-21 with just over four minutes left.
  • The Matadors took a 40-28 advantage to halftime.
  • CSUN outrebounded CSUB 21-10 in the first 20 minutes.
  • Collum led all `Runners with 12 points in the period, but CSUN's Wright lit up the scoreboard with 17 points.
Second Half
  • Bakersfield needed less than four minutes to cut CSUN's 12-point lead to just four points, 43-39.
  • A Cameron Smith and-1 pulled with the `Runners within two points, 48-46, just over eight minutes into the second period.
  • Three minutes later, Travis Henson's layup would tie the game, 59-59, but CSUN answered right back with a 6-0 run to regain control.
  • The `Runners battled all the way to the end of the period, but Bakersfield was unable to make crucial baskets down the stretch and fell by a final score of 75-68.
