Sophia Tougas Earns Academic All-District Honors

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2022 Academic All-District® Women's Basketball Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSU Bakersfield Athletics Department congratulates Sophia Tougas, who earned Academic All-District® honors.

Representing Head Coach Greg McCall and the CSUB women's basketball team, Sophia Tougas became an Academic All-District® honoree. A redshirt-freshman from Glen Falls, New York, Tougas has emerged as an offensive leader for the `Runners in her first full year of play after taking a blanket waiver in 2020-21 and a medical redshirt in 2021-22. Thus far in the season for CSUB, she is currently tied for most games started, has committed the least personal fouls among consistent starters, shoots the second-best mark from the perimeter at .300, plays an average of 27.7 minutes per game, and has only missed three free throws all year with an .880 rate from the charity stripe.

Tougas received this honor for being an important starter or reserve player that also excelled academically. She is majoring in Communications with a minor in Psychology but has plans to play professional basketball after graduating. Through her academic career, she boasts a 3.90 cumulative GPA, which includes a perfect 4.00 GPA this last fall.

Academic All-District and All-America

Nominated student-athletes must meet the minimum athletic requirements of being a starter or important reserve. Academically, candidates must maintain at least a 3.50 GPA and they must have been at their current institution for at least a year (an exception is made for graduate transfers).

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in mid-March for the basketball programs.
