CSUB Prepare for Final Road Trip After CSUN Rematch

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With three of the season's four remaining games at home, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team is gearing up for a strong finish. After not having won in five games, the Roadrunners will certainly be looking to get back on track with wins this week, hosting CSUN in Bakersfield before traveling for their final road game at Cal State Fullerton.

Upcoming Schedule
  • vs CSUN, Thursday, Feb. 23, 11 a.m.
  • at Cal State Fullerton, Saturday, Feb. 25, 6 p.m.
`Runner Notes
  • Representing Head Coach Greg McCall and the CSUB women's basketball team, Sophia Tougas became an Academic All-District® honoree. A redshirt-freshman from Glen Falls, New York, Tougas has emerged as an offensive leader for the `Runners in her first full year of play while posting a 3.9 cumulative GPA with a 4.0 this last fall.
  • In their last two games, the `Runners were defeated by a pair of fourth quarter surges from their opponents.
  • CSUB was down just three to Cal Poly and stayed close for most of the game before the Mustangs found their stride in the final few minutes and broke away.
  • Although Hawai'i jumped out to a decent lead over the `Runners, Bakersfield was able to even the score and even take the lead at points before the Rainbow Wahine offense put up a dominant final period effort.
  • Kayla Morris is already third in CSUB D1 history for single season blocks (43). She will be chasing Janae Coffee (52) with four games remaining but is unlikely to catch the all-time single season leader, Jazmyne Bartee (74). Morris is also currently 12th in NCAA D1 with 2.39 blocks per game.
  • Regardless of how the rest of the season goes, the `Runners are playing for position and momentum at this point. Key wins down the stretch could determine a favorable matchup or even how focused the team stays as we approach the Big West Championship.
Scouting the Matadors
  • CSUN (6-21, 5-12 Big West) is led by first-year head coach Carlene Mitchell.
  • Just two weeks ago, the `Runners and Matadors faced off in a game that got out of hand for Bakersfield. CSUN took a big first-half lead, and CSUB attempted to stage a comeback but was unsuccessful despite a big third quarter.
  • After defeating CSUB, the Matadors lost their next three games each by at least double-digit points before taking a four-point win at UC Riverside.
  • Since joining the Big West, CSUN has the 2-1 record advantage, so CSUB will surely be looking to even the score on top of vying for position with the Matadors. Both teams are currently near the bottom of the conference standings.
  • Hennie van Schaik managed to reset her career high of 18 points last time against CSUN, so the `Runners will most likely be looking for her to have a similar impact.
Scouting the Titans
  • Cal State Fullerton (11-15, 6-11 Big West) is led by sixth-year head coach Jeff Harada.
  • One of CSUB's three conference wins this season have come against the Titans. In what was also the largest conference win for the `Runners, 64-58, three different `Runners tallied double-digit point totals.
  • After defeating UC San Diego over a week ago, the Titans have lost their last two games against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. They will come up against UC Davis before hosting Cal State Bakersfield.
  • Last time against Bakersfield, Fullerton went down to a fervent CSUB attack before making a comeback attempt in the second half. However, CSUB's trio of double-digit scorers, with Morgan Edwards setting a new career high 13 points, kept up the pressure to win.
  • CSUB have not lost against Cal State Fullerton since becoming Big West conference opponents, with the `Runners winning all four.
