Game Recap: Softball |

CSUB Offense Leads to a 1-1 Day in Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Cal State Bakersfield softball team wrapped day one in Las Vegas going 1-1. Day two brought new challenges and opportunity versus a familiar Big West foe in Hawai'i in game one and then Montana in the second game of the day. CSUB would drop game one to Hawai'i before sprinting ahead of Montana in game two. Bakersfield was led by timely hitting and a good pitching performance from Brianna Sanchez.

CSUB 6, Hawaii 14 (6 inn.)
  • Hawai'i struck early for seven runs in the first inning.
  • In the third, CSUB was able to string along hits to narrow the lead down to 7-4.
  • Cal State Bakersfield then nabbed another run from a Reina Castillo single to centerfield in the fourth inning. UH then answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame making the score 10-5.
  • Bakersfield saw much of its offense come from Maya Williams, Shaylene Fuimaono, and Castillo, who each put together a two-hit game respectively.
  • CSUB was unable to complete the comeback as Hawai'i pulled away late.
CSUB 7, Montana 3
  • The `Runners started game two off hot, grabbing one run in the first inning from a Williams single through the left side driving in Savanna Montoya.
  • CSUB was not done just yet, as they put up four runs in the second inning thanks to two errors, one hit by pitch, and hits by Kaia Johnson and Samantha Martinez.
  • Sanchez had another great pitching performance in the circle and took a no hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Montana came on late scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • CSUB would answer back with one run of their own in the top of the seventh inning on a Maya Molina-Villareal single up the middle, which scored Kailey Samora.
  • Montana would nab one hit in the seventh inning, although Sanchez would put an end to the Grizzlies' attempt at a comeback and achieve another complete game, putting the `Runners back into the win column.
Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "I'm very proud of our team and how they responded today. We got off to a rocky start in the first inning against Hawai'i, but we never quit and gave them a run deep into the game. It says a lot about what we're truly capable of as a club."
  • "Our offense showed up in a big way; that's who we can be on that side of the ball. We competed every at bat, made consistent hard contact and threatened regularly."
  • "Bri continues to pitch with tremendous confidence, and her stuff has been fantastic. She has really stepped up and is giving us a chance every time she takes the ball."
  • "Against Montana we took control from the first pitch and never let up. It's an illustration of our potential. I hope it proves to be a notable turning point for our team this season, and how we compete."
