CSUB and Sperl Pick Up First Win in Doubleheader Split

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Cal State Bakersfield softball team came out of last weekend wanting, losing all five games of last week's tournament, four of those happening in five innings. However, the Roadrunners set the record straight with a big 9-inning win against Montana to open up this weekend's tournament in Las Vegas. The second leg of the doubleheader would end in an 8-0 UNLV through five innings, but head coach Dan Sperl and his squad will surely be proud of nabbing that first win to open the day.

CSUB 3, Montana 2 (9 inn.)
  • Montana came into the game 0-4, putting CSUB on even footing with the Grizzlies to take its own first win of the year.
  • Montana's Klucewich batted the game's first run in during the third inning to put the Grizzlies up 1-0 early.
  • In the fifth, CSUB's Lauren Randle came in to pinch hit for the catcher Maya Molina-Villareal before reaching on a fielder's choice to send the pinch runner Jay Reeves across the plate, tying the game 1-1.
  • The game would stay knotted through regulation, with Brianna Sanchez allowing just one hit for a single earned run.
  • In the top of the 8th, with Montana's go-ahead runner on third, a wild pitch sent Klucewich home to put the Grizzlies back on top 2-1, but Savanna Montoya managed to tie to the game in the bottom of the 8th on a sac fly to send Violet Salazar home for the tie.
  • With a runner on second for CSUB in the bottom of the 9th, Montana made an error in shallow left-center on a fly ball to keep the `Runners alive with just one out in the inning. Reina Castillo, probably the best hitter from last week's action, drove in the walk-off single to left field.
  • That walk-off single gave CSUB not only its first win on the season but first-year head coach Dan Sperl's first career victory as well.
CSUB 0, UNLV 8 (5 inn.)
  • CSUB did a good job holding off UNLV for the first two innings, allowing just two total hits, one run, and one error. However, the Rebels had an explosive third innings in which they collected five runs on just as many hits.
  • The `Runners put the bat to the ball for their only two hits of the game in the top of the fourth, with Ciara Jensen and Reina Castillo both singling. However, that would be all for CSUB that inning and on the day.
  • The Rebels did not look back after the big third inning, tacking on two more runs through the fourth and fifth, which activated the "run rule" after CSUB finished the top of the fifth without scoring.
  • CSUB will have a chance to get one back against UNLV on the final day of the tournament, as the `Runners play the Rebels on Sunday, Feb. 19 at noon.
Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "I'm certainly happy with today's opening win – most importantly it was another great effort from our entire team, and it's a tangible result that we can use as reinforcement that all our hard work and commitment is paying off. We're working hard and getting better every time we take the field."
  • "We've talked a lot about sticking to our process, sticking together, and finding our resiliency and mental toughness. We did that all week, and again today in some high-pressure situations. As long as we continue to play the game and do the right things, we know we'll always have a chance."
