`Runners Head to Cal Poly, Host Hawai'i on Monday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Looking to start a new win streak, the Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball team will hit the road before a quick turnaround to a home game at the start of next week. The Roadrunners will head over to the Central Coast to take on Cal Poly Wednesday night in a Big West clash before hosting Hawai'i in the Icardo Center on President's Day.

Upcoming Schedule

  • vs. Hawai'i, Monday, Feb. 20, 5 p.m. (PT), Bakersfield, Calif.

`Runner Notes
  • Bakersfield (9-16, 5-9 BW) split a pair of Big West games last week, having its three-game win streak snapped by Long Beach State on Saturday.
  • With all of Bakersfield's injury troubles, junior forward Antavion Collum has stepped up and been on a tear recently. The Memphis, Tenn. native has averaged 20.8 points per game over his last six contests, including a career-high 31 points against UC Riverside on Feb. 2.
  • For his efforts, Collum was named the Big West Player of the Week last week.
  • Head Coach Rod Barnes currently has a 100-44 record (.694) in the Icardo Center.
Quotes from Head Coach Rod Barnes
  • "Cal Poly is a team in need of a win. They have played extremely well at home. They have lost some close games...They have an older team, a lot of veterans on their team who have been together for a while, they just haven't been able to pull out the close wins. We're gonna have our hands full. We have to be prepared and ready."
  • "Against Hawai'i, I think I saw our team start to gain trust and confidence in each other, as far as this particular group of guys...We were aggressive and I think, if you take the second half of that game and every game since, we've figured out that we can score more than what we were before that."
Scouting the Mustangs
  • Cal Poly (7-19, 1-13 BW) won its first Big West game on Dec. 29, but has lost 13-straight since then. Even still, the Mustangs are dangerous, having suffered eight single-digit defeats in that span.
  • Alimamy Koroma leads the Mustang offense, averaging a little over 10 points a contest.
  • CSUB and Cal Poly enjoy a rich history that dates all the way back to the 1970s when the two programs clashed as rivals in NCAA Division II. All-time, Bakersfield holds a 39-25 edge on the Mustangs.
  • The `Runners are 9-0 against Cal Poly in CSUB's Division I era (since 2007-08) and all of those games were played under the watch of Barnes.
  • On Jan. 5 of this year, Cal Poly came to the Icardo Center where CSUB handed its visitors a 61-51 loss. The `Runners pulled ahead of the Mustangs early and held on for the double-digit victory.
Scouting the Rainbow Warriors
  • Hawai'i (18-8, 9-5 BW) is in the hunt for a Top 3 finish in the Big West standings.
  • Hawai'i has enjoyed a uniquely steady lineup with the same five men starting in all 26 games so far this season, one of only a handful of programs across the country to boast that kind of consistency.
  • CSUB and UH are in the early stages of their all-time series. Monday's game will be just the seventh all-time meeting between the two programs with Hawai'i owning a narrow, 4-2 edge in the series.
  • When CSUB traveled to Honolulu on Jan. 28, the Warriors built up an 18-point lead early in the second half. The `Runners put together a valiant comeback effort but ultimately fell, 72-69.
