Montoya's Play Highlights Opening Day in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – The 2023 softball season kicked off on Friday as Cal State Bakersfield tackled a pair of tough foes. In the first two games of the Daniel Sperl era, the Roadrunners battled hard, but eventually fell to both Utah State and No. 2 UCLA at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament.

CSUB 2, Utah State 10 (5 inn.)
  • Bakersfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Utah State after two innings.
  • The Aggies tallied three runs in the third inning, five runs in the fourth, and two runs in the fifth to earn a 10-2 victory.
  • Savanna Montoya hit a solo home run in the top of the first against Utah State. The senior outfielder went 2-for-5 on the day with five putouts in the outfield.
CSUB 1, No. 2 UCLA 18 (5 inn.)
  • UCLA, ranked No. 2 in the country, jumped out on the `Runners with 12 runs in the first inning on the way to an 18-1 run.
  • The `Runners scored their lone run in the top of the. Maya Williams' RBI single plated Shaylene Fuimano from second base.
  • Bakersfield's starting pitcher, Kaycie Kennedy, struggled with giving up walks as a tight strike zone limited her ability to paint the corners.
  • Brianna Sanchez threw 3.1 innings in relief against UCLA, holding the potent Bruins to just one run over the final two innings.
  • Right fielder Maya Williams went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI and four putouts.
Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "Obviously, those aren't the results that we wanted and the scores are ugly, but I'm really not disappointed with how we played. I thought we played fine defensively."
  • "I'm convinced more than ever that we can hit the ball. We hit the ball hard all day. We hit five or six hard balls that they just made spectacular plays and stole five or six hits from us.
  • "We need to get better in the circle. I think we have some real potential there, and once we get that part of our game together, we'll be more competitive."
  • "Savanna Montoya was incredible today, both defensively and at the plate. She looked like a big time Division I athlete. Also, I was really pleased with Brianna Sanchez and the way she came in and essentially shut down UCLA's offense over the last couple of innings."
