`Runner Pitching Keeps Game Close Against Utah State

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – On the second day of the annual Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, the Cal State Bakersfield softball team came up against both Utah State and UCLA for the second time. Brianna Sanchez was a workhorse in a pitchers' duel against Utah State, but CSUB could not find the offense to beat the Aggies, falling 3-2 after 9 innings. In a much better game than yesterday against UCLA, the Roadrunners kept the Bruins relatively close. Kirsten Martinez pitching a full four innings, but UCLA pulled ahead early and never looked back to win 8-0 in a 5-inning no-hitter.

CSUB 2, Utah State 3 (9 inn.)
  • For the second-straight day, Bakersfield sprinted ahead of Utah State, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Jay Reeves, the only freshman on the CSUB squad, scored her first collegiate run on sixth-year senior Samantha Martinez's RBI single.
  • Down to its final two outs, Utah State tied the game in the bottom of seventh with a clutch RBI single from pinch-hitter Taryn Edds.
  • With the international tiebreaker in effect and runners placed on second base, both team scored one run in the eighth inning. For Bakersfield, Natalya Rodriguez's RBI single scored Lauren Randle and temporarily gave CSUB the edge.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, the Aggies delivered the final blow on an RBI single, closing out the narrow victory.
  • CSUB's starting pitcher, Brianna Sanchez, battled into extra innings with USU's Hailey McClean, the 2021 Gatorade Nevada Softball Player of the Year. Sanchez only allowed one earned run over the nine-inning game.
  • McClean was powerful, striking out 20 Roadrunners but using 167 pitches to do. Sanchez countered that effort with precision, recording zero strikeouts and using just 129 pitches while letting the CSUB defense back her up with 15 fly outs and 10 ground outs.
CSUB 0, No. 2 UCLA 8 (5 inn.)
  • In stark contrast to the first game against the Bruins, CSUB and pitcher Kirsten Martinez held UCLA to just three first-inning runs, as Martinez did everything in her power to give the `Runners a solid chance against one of the country's best teams.
  • UCLA's starting pitcher, Taylor Tinsley, pitched a near-perfect game from the circle. Through five innings, she shut down all CSUB batters with four strikeouts and no hits allowed on just 63 total pitches.
  • Bruin shortstop Maya Brady hit a perfect 3-for-3 on the evening, which included one of UCLA's three home runs, one of those from the first inning.
  • Bakersfield's lone baserunner came via Violet Salazar's contact that turned into an error for UCLA's defense.
  • Kirtsen Martinez provided admirable pitching, all things considered, striking out a batter and allowing ten hits in four innings pitched.
  • Although the bats never quite got going for CSUB, coach Sperl believes in what he and the team are building towards. That is more than evident in the improvement made from yesterday's 18-1 loss compared to today's.
Quotes from Head Coach Daniel Sperl
  • "We weren't as dangerous offensively today or as sharp on defense, but we got tremendous pitching performances from both Bri Sanchez and Kirsten Martinez to keep us in games and give us a chance. Overall, we took another step forward and now need to put all three phases of the game together."
  • "We improved today and want to continue to improve tomorrows, and again over the next weekend. We're searching for consistency and the hope is to build something special in Bakersfield. That won't happen overnight, so we'll continue to assess our roster and coach up this group. They've done everything we've asked so far."
