- Fresh off 2023-24’s first win, and a pivotal rivalry victory at that, the Cal State Bakersfield women’s basketball team is primed to continue on with the same drive and determination that downed the Fresno State Bulldogs.
- In a rare occurrence, the Roadrunners will travel all the way across the nation for a two-game tournament hosted by Long Island University in Brooklyn, N.Y. during Thanksgiving weekend.
- The `Runners first face off against the hosts, LIU, before playing ex-WAC rival New Mexico State the next day. McCall and Co. then head straight to Nebraska on the way back to California for a Monday matinee at Omaha.
- With nearly an entire month between the Fresno State game and their next home contest against Pepperdine on Dec. 16, the `Runners will be in, by far, their longest stretch away from the Icardo this season.
- Currently, Sophia Tougas finally found her footing and now leads the team at 12.3 points per game, followed closely behind by fellow veteran Grace Hunter at a mark of 10.3 and newcomer Jordan Olivares sitting at 9.3 points.
- Aside from scoring, Hunter also boasts the assists lead with 12 helpers, while Jordan Olivares has been playing a two-way game, leading the team with 7.0 rebounds per game and 5 steals.
CSUB at Long Island (0-4) - Friday, Nov. 24, 4:00 PM
- The women’s basketball team tips off its four-straight road games with a 2,800 mile trip to the Big Apple, where the Roadrunners will come up against the Long Island Sharks at their home arena in Brooklyn.
- Unsurprisingly, this will be the first matchup between the two opponents, and the first time in program history that CSUB women’s basketball travels to New York for a matchup, during Thanksgiving as well.
- Aside from fighting the holiday airport foot traffic, Bakersfield will be battling a team hungry for its first win of the season. LIU’s offense scores at a below average clip, which keeps it in games at times, but the Sharks’ defense has taken the brunt of this season’s losses.
- Three of Long Island’s four opponents this season have put up 80+ points on them. However, the Sharks had their best game of the season so far in their most recent 54-51 homecoming loss to Lafayette.
- The Sharks are currently ranked 45th in Division I with 11.5 steals per game, and their leading defensive presence, Amaya Dowdy, is top-100 with 1.5 per game on her own.
CSUB vs. New Mexico State (2-2) - Saturday, Nov. 25, 10:00 AM
- Two former WAC rivals with plenty of history play each other in the Long Island Tournament, as Bakersfield comes up against New Mexico State for the first time since the foes were part of the same conference in 2019-20.
- CSUB trails 5-10 in the all-time series but have kept up with NM State step-for-step in most games. During their final year as conference opponents, the `Runners and Aggies were separated by just six points between the two games.
- The Aggies will enter the Long Island tournament coming off a two-game winning streak, including a 57-38 defensive domination of Portland State. New Mexico State will play Hampton the same day that CSUB plays Long Island.
- All-CUSA Preseason Team Honoree, Molly Kaiser, is off to a hot start this season, averaging 16.8 points per game, with double-digits in every game so far while sinking 58% of her three-point attempts.
CSUB at Omaha (1-4) - Monday, Nov. 27, 3 PM
- Bakersfield wraps up the chaotic three-game, four-day stretch with another road matchup, this time against the Omaha Mavericks.
- The `Runners lead the all-time series 3-2, pulling ahead after last season’s big home win when Bakersfield picked up a thrilling 69-68 overtime victory over a tough Mavericks squad.
- Omaha has endured a tough season thus far, as all four losses have come at the cost of opponent’s scoring at least 80 points, with two of those being at least 90 points.
- Even so, the `Runners must be careful and play Omaha as hard as anyone, given the largest differential in a single game between these two teams is no more than twelve points, but is generally in the single digits.
- Although the Mavericks do not sport a scorer averaging in the double-digits per game, Omaha has incredible depth with nine different players averaging at least 7.0 per game.
