CSUB Wrestling to Host No. 4 Michigan on Sunday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The dual season starts on Sunday for the Cal State Bakersfield wrestling program, and the Roadrunners are leaping right into one of their toughest challenges of the year. CSUB will host a Top-5 ranked team in the Michigan Wolverines, who finished second overall at the 2022 NCAA Championships.

  • "There are some big individual matchups [against Michigan] that I am really looking forward to. We are definitely the underdogs and have nothing to lose. Last year they beat us up pretty good. This is a great opportunity to show how much we've improved. If we compete like we are capable of, we can surprise a lot of people."
  • "I think it's big for the program and the school to have an opponent like Michigan in our home gym. We want to wrestle the best. No better way to have our first home dual.
  • On biggest takeaways from early-season tournaments: "We've come a long way in the last year, and there are some tough decisions at a few weights as far as who is going to be the starter. We have a young team with only one senior in the line-up. The team is way ahead of where they were a year ago. Chance was right in there with a three-time NCAA Runner Up at Scuffle, Angelo made the finals of the Roadrunner Open and also placed at the Scuffle. We still need to work on consistency and wrestling through every position."

  • Bakersfield sent twelve `Runners to the Southern Scuffle on New Year's Day.
  • Rich, Martinoni, and Richard Castro-Sandoval all made it to Day 2 of the Scuffle and the former two `Runners both placed.
  • A couple `Runners may get opportunities for rematches against their Wolverine counterparts. Chance Rich and Dylan Ragusin did battle at the Cliff Keen Invitational with the Wolverine's 133-pounder taking a 6-1 decision. At 149, Johnathan Viveros and Chance Lamer also did battle in Las Vegas with Lamer pinning the `Runner.
