'Runners Begin Pac-12 Slate Against #26 Oregon State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After putting on a good show with some strong individual victories at the Chippewa Challenge, the Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team gets back to work with the season's first Pac-12 dual at Oregon State. The Roadrunners will be meeting the Beavers for the second time this year, as the foes had individual wrestlers battle at the Roadrunner Open back in November. CSUB will look to begin its conference slate of duals with a big win against the ranked Oregon State.

Upcoming Schedule
  • at Oregon State, Jan. 29
`Runner Notes
  • After a mid-season quad-meet, CSUB will receive no breaks, as the `Runners continue right along with Pac-12 while coming up against #26 Oregon State, a school that has seven wrestlers ranked by both FloWrestling and InterMat.
  • There are quite a few slated matchups where CSUB will have a chance to either take a sweep or get payback against Oregon State's wrestlers that the `Runners faced earlier in the season at the Roadrunner open. Here's a breakdown of the aforementioned battles:
  • At 133, #23/#21 Chance Rich had defeated Richard Bell by tech fall in the first championship round before losing a narrow decision to #19/#19 Jason Shaner in the semifinal. Rich will obviously be looking to avenge that loss, especially after losing to a lower-ranked opponent at the Chippewa Challenge.
  • At 141, Angelo Martinoni, who is no longer ranked after a few tough losses recently, managed to defeat two Beavers on his way to the first-place match at the Roadrunner open before losing to #17/#25 Cleveland Belton in the championship bout. Not only will Martinoni want to get payback for falling to second place back then, but he will also be looking to come back into the fray of ranked wrestlers.
  • In all, many of Oregon State's wrestlers that CSUB defeated or lost to at the Roadrunner Open are not slated to battle in the upcoming bout, but the `Runners will be looking to get back on track regardless with an opportunity to open conference play with a victory. Josh Brown will hope to channel his dominant 3-0 performance from the Chippewa Challenge into this matchup and give CSUB a leg up against a very strong opponent.

Scouting the Beavers
  • Oregon State (5-5, 1-0 Pac-12) is led by third-year head coach Chris Pendleton.
  • This matchup, on paper with Oregon State sporting seven ranked wrestlers, will be CSU Bakersfield's greatest test thus far, and a particularly tough challenge to open the Pac-12 dual slate of the season.
  • Chance Rich and Angelo Martinoni both have an opportunity to make up for championship round losses suffered against their Oregon State counterparts from the Roadrunner Open. In particular, Martinoni will look for a way to return to the ranking with a much-needed win.
  • Oregon State and Cal State Bakersfield have faced off every single season since 2007-08, with the exception of the canceled COVID-19 season, and the Beavers currently lead the all-time series with an 11-3 record. Although the `Runners were defeated 36-4 last year, they will look for inspiration in the 26-16 victory over the Beavers just three years ago in 2019-20.
  • At a 5-5 dual record this season, Oregon State has come up against and only lost to established, proven programs, hence the Beavers' national team ranking. Bakersfield will surely have hard work ahead, but Luke Smith believes in his men to come out on top regardless of the challenge.
