Smith's Career-High 27 Points Not Enough at UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Facing off against The Big West's top team on the road, the Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball team fell in the Thunderdome Saturday night. UC Santa Barbara (16-3, 7-1 BW) earned a 76-58 win despite Roadrunner senior Cameron Smith going off for a career-high 27 points.

Notables
  • The `Runners (6-13, 2-6 BW) enjoyed an extremely efficient night out of Smith, who converted 11-of-16 attempts from the field.
  • CSUB also got double-digit scoring efforts out of freshman Kaseem Watson (10), who earned his first start of the season, and junior Antavion Collum (10).
  • UCSB outrebounded CSUB 30-18 on the night as Bakersfield only tallied one offensive board.
  • For the second time this season, the `Runners limited UCSB's Ajay Mitchell, one of the top scorer's in the league, to a relatively quiet night (eight points, four assists).
  • Miles Norris tallied 24 points to lead the Gauchos to victory.

First Half
  • Bakersfield jumped out to a 13-7 advantage early on their hosts with Collum contributing eight points on 4-of-4 shooting.
  • UCSB responded with a 9-0 run to take a 16-13 lead midway through the first period.
  • The Gauchos later used a 10-0 run to go ahead 31-20. UCSB eventually took its biggest lead of the game, 39-24, into the halftime break.
  • Bakersfield rivaled UCSB in most statistical categories, but the major exception was a 21-8 disadvantage in rebounds, leading to many more offensive opportunities for the Gauchos.
  • Collum and Smith both tallied 10 points in the first half to lead all scorers.
  • CSUB had excellent ball movement in the period, assist on seven of their ten made field goals.
Second Half
  • The `Runners were never able to close their deficit as the Gauchos gradually grew their advantage.
  • UCSB took its biggest lead of the night at 68-43, with 6:33 left on the clock, on the way to an 18-point victory.
  • Smith scored a 17 of his 27 points in the second half.
