Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Written by James Tsitakis-Cecil

`Runners Downed by Strong UCSD Second Quarter

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – With a home game on the horizon, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team will certainly be looking for chances to get back on track in the Big West. Coming into the game against UC San Diego, the Roadrunners stood at 1-4 in-conference, losing their last four straight, but facing two straight teams with losing records was the perfect opportunity to try and nab that elusive win. Against the Tritons, CSUB was unable to overcome a strong second quarter from UCSD that saw Bakersfield convert just one field goal. UC San Diego would go on to keep the gap large, winning 62-50.

Notables
  • Defense against top scorers is usually a strength of CSUB, but the Big West's 7th best shooter, Sydney Brown, was able to beat the trend and put up 20 points against the `Runners; a big reason why UCSD was able to gain such a large lead and not look back.
  • Taylor Caldwell managed an outstanding game despite the result, leading Bakersfield with 16 points on 5-of-9 from the field. Garrisen Freeman also impressed and finally seemed to make a statement with a career-high 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 2-of-3 scored from the perimeter.
  • On the defensive side of things, Soli Herrera continued her reign as CSUB's board queen, picking up 8 rebounds in just 21 minutes of play, while Kayla Morris had her typically dominant day of 4 blocks, still providing offense as well with 5 points.
  • Finishing ability has been a theme of the season, with CSUB's best performances coming in the first and third quarters of this game. The first quarters of each half, CSUB shot well about 40% from the field, while keeping up the pace with the Triton offense, but the second and fourth quarters were a different story entirely, scoring 15 total points on 8% and 27% shooting respectively.
Next on the Schedule First Half
  • UC San Diego came out hot in the first quarter, quickly scoring five points in under a minute, but CSUB answered and got a foothold in the game in response, tying up the game 8-8 by the first media timeout.
  • After taking control midway through the first, CSUB never looked back and continue piling on the offense despite UCSD trying to keep up with the `Runners. Heading into the second quarter, Bakersfield led 17-13 with five players already on the scoreboard, including 11 of those points coming off the bench.
  • The Tritons finished the quarter on a 17-6 run to end up leading 30-23 at halftime. CSUB scored just one field goal in the second quarter, while shooting 7.7% from the field to UCSD's 42.9% shooting effort.
  • By halftime, the `Runners trailed in almost every statistical category despite one of their best first quarter performances of the season thus far. At the break, Taylor Caldwell and Kayla Morris led CSUB both offensively and defensively.
Second Half
  • CSUB came out of the half on a rip-roaring pace, coming within one point of the UC San Diego lead, but once the Tritons were settled, they kept the `Runners at an arm's length again. By the media timeout, UCSD took its largest lead of the game to that point, 39-29.
  • With the score gap at 12, midway through the third quarter, coach McCall put his team into a full-court press to try and get back into the game. CSUB was able to respond in-kind, but was unable to slow UCSD's scoring ability, with the gap never getting back below 9 by the end of the third quarter.
  • Things did not get much better in the fourth quarter, as San Diego retained a sizeable lead for the entirety of the period, eventually taking the result 62-50.
