CSUB Falls to UNCO, but Urias Pulls Off Amazing Upset

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team gave No. 22 Northern Colorado a fight during the Roadrunners' second dual of the season. Although the Bears would go on to win handedly 30-12, Bakersfield picked up three individual wins on the day to keep the bout close at points. Despite the loss, the `Runners never looked back and showed grit to improve from last week's battle against Michigan.

Notables
  • The second of three ranked opponents at the start of their dual schedule, the Northern Colorado Bears sported five ranked wrestlers, including the 141 No. 1 wrestler in the nation, Andrew Alirez.
  • The first three matchups did not go CSUB's way. Beginning with the 149, Josh Brown kept it close but eventually dropped a 10-8 decision, but Brock Rogers was defeated by No. 32 Vinny Zerban in a 17-0 tech fall while Braden Smelser was pinned afterwards.
  • Bakersfield took the next two in spectacular fashion. First, in the 174, unranked Albert Urias was down 3-0 for most of the battle before tying it late and eventually pulling off a 5-3 sudden victory upset over Northern Colorado's No. 26 Andrew Berreyesa. Jacob Hansen followed that up by pinning his Bear counterpart, just 46 seconds into the second period.
  • Northern Colorado had a pin of their own against Kristian Dove before Jake Andrews and Eddie Flores were beat via decision.
  • In the marquee matchups of the day, No. 19 Chance Rich completed the expected, but strong, victory against No. 33 Jace Koelzer in a 7-2 decision. In the final battle of the dual, No. 28 Angelo Martinoni was unable to get the upset, as he was defeated by No. 1 Andrew Alirez in a 12-4 major decision.
  • Northern Colorado finished the dual with a decisive 30-12 win, but there are many positives to take from the event, especially with Albert Urias' unexpected, but well-deserved upset victory over his ranked opponent.
