CSUB Wrestling Comes Up Against Two Ranked Big 12 Foes

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After dropping a shutout loss in the recent dual-meet against the top-5 ranked Michigan Wolverines, Cal State Bakersfield wrestling goes on the road to face a pair of tough, Big 12 opponents, in No. 22 Northern Colorado and No. 28 Air Force. Despite the result against Michigan, there were a few solid individual performances that the Roadrunners can look back on for inspiration against these upcoming foes.

 `Runner Notes
  • After facing a ranked Michigan squad, CSUB comes up against its second and third straight ranked opponents in just a two-week span. Both Northern Colorado and Air Force also sent multiple wrestlers to the NCAA Championship last year.
  • Mateo Morales came closest to beating his Michigan counterpart, leading 3-2 in the final seconds of the third period before allowing a quick takedown to end the bout with a loss. Angelo Martinoni battled his ranked opponent close, only dropping a 4-1 decision, while Chance Rich gave a valiant effort losing a 7-3 decision to the No. 5 ranked wrestler in his weight class.
  • Bakersfield's ranked wrestlers will have opportunities to beat a few ranked foes against both Northern Colorado and Air Force. Rich will come up against two ranked opponents with the Bears' No. 33 Jace Koelzer and the Falcons' No. 21 Cody Philpen, while Martinoni has a chance at a humongous upset against Northern Colorado's No. 1 Andrew Alirez.

Scouting the Bears
  • No. 22 Northern Colorado (7-1, 0-1 Big 12) has a storied recent history against the `Runners. CSUB has a 5-2 all-time series record against the Bears and took their last matchup 20-16 back on Jan. 26, 2020 with the decisive matchup being won by Angelo Martinoni.
  • The Bears sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships last year, including the current No. 1 in the 141 lb weight class, Andrew Alirez. He had a historically great tournament, making it to the Blood Round, further than any Northern Colorado wrestler since 2010's Justin Gaethje, a former UFC Lightweight Champion.
  • While Chance Rich and Angelo Martinoni will face Northern Colorado's No. 33 and No. 1 ranked wrestlers respectively, the `Runners will have a few of their unranked wrestlers coming up against three more ranked Bears.
Scouting the Falcons
  • No. 28 Air Force (2-0, 1-0 Big 12) has only ever faced off against Bakersfield once, a matchup that CSUB lost 25-9 last year on Feb. 13, 2022.
  • Josh Brown has the chance to face Dylan Martinez again, a battle that Brown won in a 4-2 decision. Albert Urias pulled off an upset against Sam Wolff last year, who was ranked at the time. They will most likely wrestle each other again in a much-anticipated rematch.
  • Air Force sent two wrestlers to the NCAA Championships last year, including their returning heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson who was named the 2022 Most Dominant Wrestler in the Nation with a record of 26-2. One of those two losses actually came against CSU Bakersfield's Jacob Sieder.
