'Runners Carry Winning Streak into Date with Utah Tech

Bakersfield - The California State University, Bakersfield Men's Soccer carries a two-match winning streak into the final contest of a three-game home stand, hosting visiting Utah Tech on Thursday night (7 p.m.) at The Main Soccer Field. The Roadrunners are 2-2-0, and 2-0-0 in home games, after posting wins over Grand Canyon and Gonzaga a week ago. The Trailblazers enter this week's contest with a record of 0-3-0. CSUB will also travel to California Baptist next Tuesday (7 p.m.), for a non-conference match-up between former Western Athletic Conference rivals.

Bakersfield's recent run of success has been buoyed by a strong effort on the defensive side of the ball. After allowing six goals against on opening weekend, CSUB surrendered just one in a pair of wins last weekend. Goalkeeper Filippo Dadone was named The Big West's Defensive Player of the Week after making six saves last Thursday, and another pair on Sunday night. Shammai Camara, Harry Downing, Bryson Hankins, Stephon Marcano and Conor Walsh have done most of the heavy lifting on the 'Runner back line - limiting two high powered offenses last weekend.

After falling in Bakersfield, a dangerous Grand Canyon team picked up a 3-2 victory at #4 UCLA, Sunday night in Los Angeles.

ROADRUNNER QUICK STRIKES...

* Goalkeeper Filippo Dadone was named The Big West's Defensive Player of the Week, Monday, after making eight-saves and earning a 2-0-0 record leading Bakersfield to a weekend sweep of visiting Grand Canyon and Gonzaga...

* Sophomore Rene Cortez figured in both goals of a 2-1 win vs. Grand Canyon, CSUB's first victory of the young season. The goal was the first of his career;  it was also his first career multi-point effort...

Shammai Camara also scored the first goal of his career, when he struck for the game's only goal in a win over Gonzaga. CSUB has five goals this season, from five different goal scorers - four of whom have netted their first career goals in Bakersfield Blue & Gold...

* Jacob Fitzgerald & Andres Perez De Gracia have also netted their first collegiate goals in 2022, while captain Carlos Armendariz potted his 9th against GCU...

Bakersfield grabbed its first win of the season against Grand Canyon at The Main Soccer Field, in front of an announced crowd of 1,437, the largest CSUB soccer crowd since Oct. 6, 2021 when the club drew 1,439 in a Viva Los 'Runners win over Cal State Fullerton. The 'Runners played a home game in front of more than 1,000 fans for the third time in the past calendar year. The crowd had a significant impact as Bakersfield bested a Grand Canyon team that entered the season receiving votes in the NCAA Coaches' Poll, and followed up its defeat in Kern County with a 3-2 win over 4th-ranked UCLA in Los Angeles, Monday.

CSUB is 2-0-0 at The Main Soccer Field this season, already matching their home win total from the 2021 campaign. The 'Runners have seven home contests remaining, including Thursday's outing versus Utah Tech. Bakersfield will also host San Francisco in a non-conference match-up, and face Sacramento State, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, CSUN and UC Riverside in Big West Conference games. CSUB won six home games in the 2009 season, a program standard at the Division I level of competition.

Junior goalkeeper Filippo Dadone has been excellent between the goalposts in the early going, registering 17 total saves in just four contests (4.25 SV/GM) and boasting a .708 save percentage. Dadone was 2-0-0 with eight total saves last week, to earn Big West Defensive Player of the Week accolades. He made eight stops in a loss at San Jose State, the most by a CSUB keeper since the 2019 WAC Semi-Final - a 1-0 win over the very same SJSU Spartans.

* Carlos Armendariz goal against Grand Canyon stood up as the game winner, the third decisive goal of his Bakersfield career. Armendariz scored a pair of game winners in 2021, beating Cal State Fullerton and Sacramento State with goals from the penalty spot.

* Senior captain and central midfielder Carlos Armendariz was 4-for-5 from the penalty spot in 2021, the most penalty kick goals and attempts in a Division I season for any Roadrunner. Armendariz has nine career goals, six on penalty kicks. He is the team's top returning scorer from a season ago, and the top all-time scorer on the active roster with nine goals and an assist for 19 career points.

* The 'Runners have advanced to conference tournaments in each of head coach Richie Grant's seven seasons in Bakersfield. Last season, CSUB placed fourth in the Big West - after being picked to finish dead last - and hosted a quarterfinal contest with UC Davis at The Main Soccer Field. This season, CSUB was picked to place 8th in the 10-team league...

* Five different Roadrunners have capped internationally at the youth or senior* level. Damian Alguera (USA & El Salvador), Stephon Marcano (Trinidad & Tobago*), Scott Pengelly (Northern Ireland), all boast international caps, while Carlos Armendariz and Adrian Medina have each represented the United States at the Senior National Level in Futsal. Marcano dressed for a pair of T&T friendlies this past summer, at Bolivia and at Belize.

* Ten Roadrunners prepped for the college game by representing and competing with professional youth academies - including Damian Alguera (Philadelphia Union, Sporting KC, SJ Earthquakes), Filippo Dadone (Juventus Academy), Harry Downing (Plymouth Argyle FC), Kevin Estrada (San Francisco Glens), Bryson Hankins (Seattle Sounders FC), Sucre Herrera (Sacramento Republic FC), Nathan Jimenez (Sacramento Republic FC), Adrian Medina (San Francisco Glens), Scott Pengelly (Fleetwood Town FC) and Andres Perez de Gracia (Crystal Palace FC & Derby County FC).
