`Runner Golfers Start Season with Strong Rounds

EDEN, Utah – In just the first day of competition in the 2022-23 season, the Cal State Bakersfield golf team has proved that a big year is ahead. Under the leadership of second-year Head Coach Tiffanie Yabut, the Roadrunners opened the year with 36 holes of golf at the Kelsey Chugg Invitational on Monday. Yabut's squad has already improved upon its best round from last season and the `Runners have their sights set on shifting the direction of the program into a legitimate contender in The Big West.

Quotes from Head Coach Tiffanie Yabut
  • "Our first round was tough. We committed to our game plan, but we struggled with course management and spent most of our round trying to adjust to the speed of the greens and landing spots into greens. The greens are fast and firm and we put ourselves in tough positions to score."
  • "I am proud of the fight and grit the team showed in the second round. We adjusted to the greens and picked better landing spots after Round 1 and came back strong in Round 2."
  • "I am especially proud of the great performance by freshman Sarah Mutai. She is a fiery competitor and put together two strong rounds for us. The only shots she lost were from course management, so it was a very impressive performance and debut as a Roadurnner."
