Fresno State Holds Off CSUB 3-1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The California State University, Bakersfield volleyball team closed out the Central California Challenge with one final battle Saturday evening. This time around, the Roadrunners went toe-to-toe with their Central Valley rivals Fresno State, but the visiting Bulldogs came out on top in a 3-1 decision in the Icardo Center. Bakersfield will now shift its focus to the start of Big West play next weekend.

  • Senior setter Laura De Pra posted her second-straight double-double with 40 assists and a career-high 13 digs.
  • Redshirt freshman Lizzie Binder tallied a match-high 15 kills on .346 hitting.
  • Senior outside Hayley McCluskey posted 13 kills and seven digs against the Bulldogs.
  • McCluskey was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 3.3 kills and 1.4 digs per set all weekend.
Set 1 (FS, 27-25) 
  • Set 1 was a close game that featured eight tied scores.
  • This set also featured CSUB's first-ever regular-season implementation of the CRS system. Fresno State utilized the first review to have a call reversed in the Bulldogs' favor. 
  • Fresno State had three set-point opportunities and finally sealed the deal.
Set 2 (CSUB, 26-24) 
  • An extremely tight set featuring 14 tied scores.
  • The `Runners made a late, 4-0 run to take a 22-21 lead late in the set and finally clinched the game.
  • Binder tallied eight kills in the second game alone, including four of the last six for CSUB.
Set 3 (FS, 25-19) 
  • The `Runners kept the score close until late in the game.
  • The Bulldogs pulled away, winning five of the last seven points to secure the win and go ahead on the match again. 
Set 4 (FS, 25-22)
  • The Bulldogs jumped out to an early, 5-1 lead and kept the `Runners at arms' distance the entire set.
  • Naomi Chankoumi sparked a late surge as CSUB pulled within two points at 22-20. 
  • The Bulldogs closed out the match by winning the final three points.
