`Runners Sweep West Virginia for First-Ever Win Over Big 12 Foe

VERMILLION, S.D. – Earning the program's first-ever win against a Big 12 foe, the Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team swept West Virginia on Saturday morning. The Roadrunners closed out the South Dakota Classic with a historic win behind a standout blocking effort and a well-balanced offense, ousting the Mountaineers in straight sets.

Notables
  • The Bakersfield volleyball team earned its first win over a Big 12 program (0-5 previously).
  • Despite being undersized against a tall WVU squad, the `Runners posted 13.0 team blocks, second most in CSUB's Division I history in a three-set match.
  • Middle blocker Sophia Bertotti Metoyer tied CSUB's blocks record for a three-set match with eight blocks against the Mountaineers.
  • Hayley McCluskey (12 kills), Lizzie Binder (10), and Ava Palm (8) led the `Runner offensive effort.
  • Palm, a Bakersfield native, finished the match with eight kills on .368 hitting, seven digs, and five blocks.
  • CSUB will ride the momentum of the big win into its own home tournament next week in the Icardo Center.
Quotes from Head Coach Giovana Melo
  • "This was the best volleyball match we have played this year. Everything we have been working on came together today. We served every spot that Stevi Robinson-Trail gave them. We passed way better. We also did a really good job blocking against a physical team."
  • "We were patient today. I kept the telling the team if we can dig some balls and block some balls, we'll put ourselves in better position."
  • "Defensively, we were very locked into the game plan. We knew what our plan was against West Virginia and the team executed the game plan extremely well and were focused on the details. Sophia has improved tremendously in such a short period of time. She has had to learn the way we block and the way we do things and she was really dialed in."
  • "Coming off the two losses we had yesterday, this match showed the resilience we have as a team."
Set 1 (CSUB, 25-22)
  • The two teams played a very tight first set with nine tied scores, including 22-22.
  • Bertotti Metoyer closed the set with back-to-back kills, her only two kills of the set.
  • McCluskey led all players with four kills while Bertotti Metoyer tallied five blocks.
  • Setter Laura De Pra tallied 12 assists in the first game.
Set 2 (CSUB, 25-22)
  • A 5-1 run gave CSUB some early separation.
  • The Mountaineers pulled within one point at 19-18 but Bakersfield won four of the final six points and closed out the win.
  • Palm and Binder both tallied four kills in the second set.
  • De Pra boasted 26 assists to that point.
  • CSUB held WVU to .042 hitting in Set 2.
Set 3 (CSUB, 25-20)
  • CSUB jumped out to a 7-3 advantage, but WVU responded with an 8-2 run to regain control.
  • From an 11-11 tie, Bakersfield pulled away with a 12-6 run and closed out its first sweep of the season.
  • McCluskey posted five kills in the final set.
  • Libero Paige Calvin finished the match with a team-high 14 digs.
