`Runners Experience Growing Pains in Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. – Opening Day of the 2022 volleyball season came with some growing pains for the young squad from California State University, Bakersfield. The Roadrunners dropped a pair of matches on Friday while kicking off the Webb-Burbridge Classic. CSUB fell to tournament host Arizona State in straight sets before losing to Toledo 3-1 in the nightcap.

Set 1 (ASU, 25-12)
  • ASU jumped out to a 7-2 lead and extended that advantage to 18-6.
  • CSUB was outhit by ASU .069 to .500.
  • Senior outside hitter Hayley McCluskey led the `Runners with four kills while taking the bulk of the team's swings.
Set 2 (ASU, 25-14)
  • CSUB kept the Sun Devils from running away with the set but the `Runners could not close the gap.
  • Bakersfield hit a much-improved clip of .208 in Game 2.
  • Redshirt freshman Lizzie Binder led CSUB with six kills after the second set.
Set 3 (ASU, 25-21)
  • CSUB earned several leads, including at 10-9, but never led by more than two points.
  • From 11-11, a 4-0 ASU run gave the Sun Devils the space they needed.

  • CSUB raced out to 9-4 lead.
  • Bakersfield used five blocks to earn the first-set victory.

Set 2 (TOL, 25-16)
  • From a 12-10 lead, Toledo went on a 5-0 run to open up some breathing room.
  • CSUB hit much better in Set 2 (.345), but Bakersfield could not slow the Rockets (.480).
Set 3 (TOL, 25-23)
  • In another tight set, the teams played to four tied scores and three lead changes.
  • CSUB pulled within one point multiple times, but the Rockets held on for a narrow win.
  • Makonova had five kills in the third set alone.
Set 4 (Toledo, 25-14)
  • Toledo sprinted away from CSUB early in the final set and led by as many as 13 points.
  • Emma Erteltova had three kills on five swings in Set 4.
Notables
  • Makonova led all `Runners with 10 kills and five blocks.
  • With 186 career block assists, Makonova is tied with Julia Bowen for fourth in CSUB's Division I history.
  • De Pra posted a career-high 35 assists.
