CSUB Drops Doubleheader to Hot-Swinging Highlanders

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Opening the final series of the 2022 season with a doubleheader at the Roadrunner Softball Complex, CSU Bakersfield fell in the pair of games to a hot-hitting squad from UC Riverside. The `Runners could not slow an offensive explosion in Game 1 and nearly escaped a perfect game. Game 2 saw CSUB take its first lead of the series, but a big inning from the Highlanders pushed UCR to the doubleheader sweep.

CSUB 1, UCR 16 (5 inn.)

The Highlanders capitalized on a CSUB error, scoring an early unearned run in the top of the first inning. Two frames later, UCR's top two hitters, Haylee Kela and Lauryn Garewal, blasted back-to-back solo homers to start a big inning. The Highlanders went on to plate a total of eight runs in the third, taking an 9-0 advantage after two and a half innings.

UCR continued its offensive momentum, adding six more runs to the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. With senior pitcher Chrys Hildebrand pitching one of the best games of her life, the Highlanders sailed all the way to the bottom of the fifth with a 16-0 lead.

Hildebrand, who struck out 11 `Runners in the game, came within one out of recording a perfect game, but CSUB's Maya Williams had other plans. The third baseman came up to bat with two outs in the bottom of the fifth and blasted a no-doubt-about-it home run over the left field wall, breaking up the UCR pitcher's bid for perfection. Hildebrand got the final out she needed to seal the 16-1, one-hitter.

CSUB 1, UCR 6

Bakersfield responded well in Game 2 on Friday with go-to pitcher Reina Castillo taking the circle. The righty from Rialto, Calif. kept the UCR bats relatively quiet through the first three innings, setting CSUB up to takes its first lead of the day.

In the bottom of the third, Bakersfield's Jocelynn Molina reached base on a throwing error and CSUB later had `Runners on the corners with two outs. The speedy wheels of Savanna Montoya took off from first and slid under the throw for a stolen base and Molina's delayed steal saw Bakersfield score a run for a 1-0 advantage.

Bakersfield's lead would be short lived as UC Riverside came out and plated five runs in the top of the fourth inning, overtaking its hosts. Garewal and Kela led the way again, capping the offensive outburst with a pair of RBI doubles. Leaving the frame with a four-run advantage, UCR coasted to a 6-1 victory behind the arm of Katie Barbarick, who threw a complete game while scattering five hits and a walk.

CSUB would strand a total of seven `Runners on base throughout the game, not struggling to get `Runners aboard, but certainly having difficulty bringing them home. The offensive highlight of Game 2 was redshirt freshman Jordan Head, who made just her third start of the season in the contest, going 2-for-3 with a double against the Highlanders.

Tomorrow

CSUB (8-36, 3-23 Big West) and UCR (24-24, 15-11 Big West) will return to the Roadrunner Softball Complex on Saturday to close out the regular season with one final game. The `Runners and Highlanders are scheduled for another 1 p.m. (PT) first pitch, but not before a Senior Day Ceremony celebrates the careers of three `Runners playing their final collegiate games: Cieana Curran, Kayla Tadewosian, and Cydney Curran.
