Castillo, Defense Shine but CSUB Falls 2-0 at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield softball team found itself locked in another pitchers' duel on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners went toe-to-toe with UC Davis but a fifth-inning breakthrough helped the Aggies to a 2-0 victory at La Rue Field.

Bakersfield looked to freshman pitcher Reina Castillo to go to battle with one of the Big West Conference's top pitchers in Davis' Kenedi Brown. Castillo, who hails from Rialto, Calif., threw a complete game with 6.0 innings pitched while scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run. Brown tossed her second-straight one-hitter against CSUB and struck out 12 `Runners in the battle of the circle.

"Reina threw a great ball game and our defense stepped up," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "This is a tough conference and I am proud we are in every game. We are learning and growing every game and that is what we are asking for in this young and maturing team."

With Brown's strikeouts throttling CSUB and Castillo and the Bakersfield defense keeping the Aggies at bay, the two teams play through four and a half scoreless innings.

UC Davis finally put some pressure on CSUB in the bottom of the fifth when an error followed by a base hit put two runners in scoring position with no outs. The Aggies' Sarah Nakahara lined a single into the outfield, plating a fellow Aggie and giving the home team a 1-0 lead. Although Bakersfield cut down another potential run at home plate on a great tag by catcher Natalya Rodriguez, Claudia Kim's RBI single later gave Davis a two-run lead.

The `Runners got their only hit of the day in the top of the third when Rodriguez legged out a bunt single. CSUB enjoyed outstanding defensive efforts from multiple fielders on Sunday. Shortstop Cydney Curran posted another Gold Glove play with a sliding grab and long throw, third baseman Shaylene Fuimaono tallied an unassisted double play, and even Castillo got in on the action, snagging a comebacker that fell out of her glove with her bare hand.

CSUB (6-21, 1-8 Big West) will return to Bakersfield for a few days before heading back out on the road. The `Runners are scheduled for another Big West series at UC Santa Barbara next weekend.
