Waves Topple Roadrunners in Malibu

Malibu, Calif. - A pair of three-run Pepperdine rallies was the difference as the Waves rolled past visiting CSU Bakersfield 7-2, Tuesday afternoon, in front of an announced crowd of 504 at Eddy D. Field in Malibu. The Waves completed a home-and-home sweep of the Roadrunners, who lost for the fourth-straight game and fell to 14-20 on the year.

"We want to win baseball games, but we'll take some positives out of today as we prepare for UC San Diego," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "We hit a lot of balls hard that didn't drop, Aaron Perez in particular, and Matty (Comnos) gave us a nice start, while Cody Tucker was strong out of the bullpen. It's a step in the right direction, as we'll walk away from today after seeing a few things we needed to see."

Matt Comnos made his first career start for Bakersfield, fanning four over 3.1 before running into trouble in the fourth when four soft singles ended his day with three earned runs allowed. Tucker surrendered singles to the first two batters he faced in relief before setting down nine straight Pepperdine hitters while pitching into the seventh.

Jashia Morrissey led CSUB at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. AJ Miller doubled in a run in the third and Perez singled in a run in the fourth to account for Bakersfield's RBI.

The Roadrunner stranded nine baserunners and fell to 0-5 in midweek contests this season.

How It Happened...
B1 | Ryan Johnson put Pepperdine on the board in the first inning with a towering solo home run high over the fence in left.

T3 | Bakersfield drew even in the top of the third when Evan Rice reached with a one-out single and scored on AJ Miller's bloop double into left.

T4 | Aaron Perez delivered a sharp single up the middle to score Jashia Morrissey, who had singled to lead off the inning. Morrissey moved to third when Seeger singled to put two runners on with no outs.

B4 | Pepperdine answered with three in the bottom of the fourth inning, using four singles and a Bakersfield error to grab a 4-2 lead. Cam Conley and Charles Masino recorded RBI singles in the frame, with Conley eventually scoring on a fielder's choice and an error off the bat of Johnson.

B7 | Three more Waves crossed the plate in the seventh on an RBI single from Michael Winaker and a two-run single chopped over a drawn in infield from Connor Bradshaw.

Notable...
• Centerfielder Jashia Morrissey is 5-for-12 with a pair of doubles over his last three outings. Morrissey has been especially hot against Big West opponents, batting .436 with a .577 on-base percentage and nine extra base hits.

Nic Anderson-Vine came off the bench and belted a pinch hit single, improving to 7-for-17 this season in limited action. Anderson-Vine also has a .476 on-base percentage with four walks against just three strikeouts.

• Right-handed reliever Cody Tucker retired nine-straight Waves during one stretch from the fourth inning through the seventh.

On Deck...
Bakersfield returns to conference play this weekend, welcoming UC San Diego to Hardt Field for a three-game series beginning on Friday evening at 6:05 p.m. The Roadrunners took three of four from the Titans in La Jolla, Calif., in 2021 when both schools were Big West Conference debutantes.
