Cal Poly Powers Past CSUB in Series Finale

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A pair of Maddie Amos grand slams helped propel the Cal Poly softball team past CSU Bakersfield in Saturday afternoon's Big West Conference series finale. The host Roadrunners fell behind early and could not slow the potent bats of the surging Mustangs as CSUB fell 14-2 in five innings.

"We can't allow this to affect us," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "We have to have short term memory and go back to work this week during practice. We've got a short week; we have to get on an airplane to Hawai'i, so we've got to let this one go. This weekend definitely stung, but we have to bounce back and get better from it."

Amos, the starting shortstop for the Mustangs, blasted grand slams in the third and fourth innings, the latter of which catalyzed a 10-run frame for Cal Poly. Bakersfield found itself trailing 14-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth with CSUB's only run coming off the first collegiate home run by Shaylene Fuimaono.

Bakersfield closed out the weekend with a bit of momentum in the bottom of the fifth as Samantha Pech's seventh RBI of the season, a sacrifice fly, gave the `Runners their second and final run of the game.

"They are fighters," Buck-Ziegler said of her squad. "They definitely have a lot of heart and a lot of grit. That's something we're very proud of. We're literally trying to mature every day. We're going to take some lumps, but we're growing."

With the loss, Bakersfield dropped to 8-25 on the year and 3-12 in Big West play. Next week, the `Runners will head for their only plane ride of the season as CSUB is slated to face Hawai'i in Honolulu, Apr. 22-23, for a three-game set.
